Burglar facing jail sentence
A BUNGLING burglar faces prison after he admitted being the getaway driver in a raid on a bookmakers. Philipp Hackelberg (32) was
caught by police as he ran away fromthe scene. A court heard how a resident
across the street sawhimtrying to break into the premises in Maid- stone at 1amon October 1, 2018. Thewitness said she had heard
banging on a window, then saw Hackelberg with a facemask and crowbar pulling up outside Coral bookmakers in a white Citroen Relay van. Prosecuting, Paul Edwards
said: “Mr Hackelberg was seen running from the direction of the scene as police arrived.” Maidstone Magistrates Court
heard that Hackelberg and his two accomplices were searched and police found crowbars, a saw, a glass cutter, hammers, a lock knife and various tools in a bag. Mr Edwards said: “His two ac-
compliceswere spotted on CCTV just two days before the at- tempted burglary, walking round the shop. Whether or not they were casing the joint is un- known.” Damage estimated at approxi-
mately £250 was caused to the outsidemetal gate. Defending, Matthew Davis said: “Mr Hackelberg has been
under intense financial strain be- cause ofmultiple loans and debts. This iswhat ultimately led himto become involved in this crime. “Due to his significant financial
hardship, he was approached by the co-accused and was told he would only need to act as a driver. “There is evidence of significant
pre-planning before this event took place and there were three people involved.” The court heard there was no
internal damage to the property and no theft was actually com- mitted. Chairman of the bench, Jean
Sanderson said: “We don’t feelwe have sufficient sentencing powers to dealwith this case in this court. “The intent behind this crime is
very serious.” The court heard Hackelberg, of
LancasterWay,WestMalling, had a previous conviction for the pos- session of crack cocaine in Janu- ary 2016, when he was given an 18-month suspended sentence. Hackelberg pleaded guilty and
the case was adjourned to Maid- stoneCrownCourt at a later date.
Village shop robber jailed
AN ARMED robber, who tar- geted a pensioner working alone in a village shop, has been jailed for more than four years. T Jack Readerwas caught by
police after brandishing a knife and snatching cash from the store in Chart Sutton, on January 21. Reader, (20), of Terrace Road,
Maidstone, entered the shop at 4.50pm and produced an “eight-inch long knife”.Maid- stone Crown Court heard he waved the blade at the shop worker, a woman in her 60s, and told her to open the till. He then fled with around
£100. Police identified Reader as the prime suspect and estab-
lished that he had used a silver Mercedes as a getaway car. He was arrested on February 13, wearing the same jacket and trousers as the robber, whose image had been caught on CCTV during the raid. Tattoos on Reader's left hand
and a distinctive mole below his ear, confirmed he was the offender. Reader was subsequently
chargedwith robbery and pos- sessing a knife in a public place. He pleaded guilty and, onMarch 14, was sentenced to four years and three months imprisonment for the robbery, and 18 months for possessing a knife in public. The sentences will run con-
currently.
