LIVE 24-SEVEN
CD PICKS - JANUARY 2019 Grateful Dead – Anthem of the Sun (Rhino)
BEV BEVAN'S
Psychedelic rock band Grateful Dead formed in San Francisco in 1966; the line-up consisted of Jerry Garcia on lead guitar, Bob Welch on rhythm guitar, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan on organ and harmonica, Phil Lesh on bass and Phil Kruetzmann on drums. This beautifully packaged double-CD (with an incredible 3D sleeve) celebrates the 50th anniversary of their LP Anthem of the Sun, the live/studio hybrid album that brought the sound of Grateful Dead live to music fans for the first time. This is primal, psychedelic Dead at its earliest and finest!
CD One contains the remastered Anthem of the Sun album in two versions: the original 1966 mix and the 1971 remix. This means that you get two versions of: That’s It For The Other One; New Potato Caboose; Born Cross Eyed; Alligator and Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks). CD Two contains previously unreleased live recordings from October 22nd 1967 at the Fillmore West in San Francisco (where I played two years later with The Move, opening for Joe Cocker and Little Richard). Grateful Dead’s set list that night in ‘67 included: Morning Dew; New Potato Caboose; It Hurts Me Too; Cold Rain And Snow; Turn On Your Lovelight; Beat It On Down The Line; and That’s It For The Other One .

This superbly put together double-CD package would make a lovely Christmas present for any Grateful Dead fan.
Cover Me – The Songs of Eddie Hinton (Ace)
Ace Records pays tribute to the late Eddie Hinton’s skills as a songwriter; the songs here span approximately the first ten years of his career. Between 1967 and 1977 he was writing with Muscle Shoals Studio’s notables Martin Greene, Donnie Fritts and Dan Penn, as well as plying his trade as a top session guitarist. Eddie Hinton and his collaborators wrote some good songs between them and many of them can be heard here on this fine compilation.
Tracks include: the gorgeous Breakfast In Bed by Dusty Springfield; A Little Bit Salty by Bobby Womack; 300 Pounds Of Hungry by Tony Joe White; Sure As Sin by Candi Staton; Cover Me by Jackie Moore; Always David by The Sweet Inspirations; Help Me Make It by Mink DeVille; Save The Children by Cher; If I Had Let You In by The Box Tops; Standing On The Mountain by Percy Sledge; People In Love by Lou Johnson; Where You Come From by Bonnie Bramlett; Where’s Eddie by Lulu; and Aretha Franklin’s Every Natural Thing.
Eddie Hinton died of a heart attack in the nineties, aged 51. DON’T MISS BEV BEVAN LIVE
