Bridgnorth-on-Severn (?) mint, Halfcrown, 1646, mm. plumelet, plumelet behind horseman, plumelet over A below, rev. plume between two plumelets and scroll above Declaration, date below, 15.67g/12h (Bull 650/3; Morr. B-3; SCBI Brooker 1123A; N 2516; S 3037). Small striking split, otherwise better than very fine and toned, very rare £5,000-£6,000

In November 1642, a commission under the Great Seal of England was sent to Sir Richard Vyvyan authorising him to set up a mint in Cornwall in order to pay troops loyal to the King. In his research, Edward Besly identifies a letter from a certain Walter Kestell, dated Boxing Day 1642, stating that Vyvyan was already busy striking coins in Truro (BNJ 1992, pp.102-3)

Truro coins were often coined on uneven blanks. Although flat in places, this coin is virtually as struck, with an exceptional portrait rarely found on provincial coins. The stops on this specimen are pellets with small stops that look like reversed 7s. These have been interpreted as Ts for the mint name
