Grief turns out to be a place none of us know until we reach it…Nor can we know ahead of the fact…the unending absence that follows, the void, the very opposite of meaning, the relentless succession of moments during which we will confrontthe experience of meaninglessness itself.

Joan Didion, The Year of Magical Thinking (October 2005) “Didion’s book is a vivid description of her grief following the sudden death of her 71 year old husband John Gregory Dunne, her close companion for more than 40 years. She finds the experience to be (perhaps thankfully) unlike anything she could have imagined. “ ( M. Shear, A.Ghesquiere & K. Glickman,

Bereavement and Complicated Grief. In Current Psychiatry Reports, November 2013). Grief refers to the psychobiological response to bereavement and may be acute (initial response), integrated (permanent response after adaptation to the loss, wherein satisfaction in ongoing life is renewed); and complicated or prolonged acute grief. Complicated grief is a distinct mental health disorder. Mourning denotes the array of psychological processes set in motion by the loss to facilitate adaptation.

the alleged gunman, and the driver as Ka Sherwin, and that they were cousins from Guihulngan City and members of the NPA. Sometime last January, Estorco said Mokong and Sherwin told him about their uncle, Rene, who they said was an NPA leader who was framed up by Sestoso and eventually arrested by the Tanjay City Police for illegal possession of firearms and explosives. They claimed they wanted to take revenge against Sestoso, according to Estorco. In his counter-affidavit, Rene, who was also known as Ka Pediong, Ka Jade Hervias, Ka Jury Merecido in the charge sheet, denied all the allegations, contending that Estorco lied and was used by somebody to advance another trump-up charges against him.

Bustamante declared he is not from Guihulngan and he has no relatives there, even the two — Mokong and Sherwin. He added that he even had wanted Sestoso as his defense witness when he was arrested by the military and the police in June 2014 for the death of a certain Narciso Bantoto Jr. After going over the allegations, the prosecutors said documentary evidences and contrasting testimonies of the witnesses showed there was no probable cause to charge Mokong, Sherwin, and Rene in court for the crime of murdering Sestoso.

A study conducted by Holly Prigerson on 233 people who have lost a loved one, most often a spouse, due to natural causes, revealed that yearning and not depression as was previously thought is the dominant feeling through this psychological picture or feeling: “that a part of you is missing and that without this essential piece you won’t be happy.” The results also revealed that yearning peaks about four months and that depression, peaks much later. This study confirmed the “stage

theory” of grief proposed by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross in the 1960s which include: disbelief, yearning, anger, depression, and acceptance. Another relevant finding of the study is that it provides a benchmark for how grief changes over time. Hence, those who help treat grief need to focus first on yearning. The study concluded that all of the negative responses are in decline by about six months after a loss. If it lasts beyond six months the bereaved survivor may be referred for treatment for complicated grief. (Michael Conlon, 2007)

Yearning and grief

Some people are yearners, that is, they ache for days and moments that exist only in the past. What is yearning? To yearn, is to “have an intense feeling of longing for something that one has lost or been separated from” (Oxford dictionary). The Germans have a similar word –‘sehnsucht’ which approximates the intense emotional state of yearning experienced after the death of a loved one. O’connor and Sussman (2014) note that “yearning is an emotional state widely experienced in situations involving loss, focused on a desire for a person,

place, or thing that was treasured in the past.” Yearning is a common experience and your feelings towards yearning may be ambivalent or may change over time. However, grief is about loss of something wonderful and so yearning as well as other grief-related experiences, are naturally a mix of happy, sad, good and bad. (whatsyourgrief.com). On the charge against Rene, the prosecutors found nothing in the evidence of the police that would directly or indirectly implicate him to the crime committed. The resolution further said that there is nothing to show or even remotely suggest that he ordered or masterminded or even was aware of the alleged plans to kill Sestoso.

Sestoso’s surviving spouse Lourdes had earlier withdrawn from pursuing the case saying that she did not believe in the theory of the police that the NPA rebels were behind the killing of her husband. (JG)

The woman’s faith led her to believe that even touching the hem of the cloak of Jesus Christ would heal her, and so she did, and she was healed, Heruela said. That is a simple but profound explanation of why Catholics show their reverence for the saints, he added. Saints, he said, were not perfect and free of sin. In fact, if one read about their lives, one would discover that many of them committed many sins but the repentance and conversion that came afterward had brought them to lead holy lives and walk the path of righteousness.
