Strasbourg A stone’s throw from Germany, Strasbourg plays host to the famous Christkindelsmärik, a must-see among Christmas markets. Arguably one of the most captivating – and certainly among the oldest; it’s been held outside the cathedral since 1570 – this proud tradition draws visitors in their millions to enjoy its 300 illuminated stalls and giant tree, with the aroma of bredele cakes wafting through the streets. FESTIVALS While summer in l’Hexagone is one long jamboree, winter is the romantic after-party (think mulled wine and starry nights). Head to the city for a wealth of special occasions up and down the country, from son et lumière shows to a weekend celebrating the humble turkey, and one especially high-brow chocolate competition in Paris.
Fête de la Dinde Symbol of Yuletide dinner plates everywhere, the hapless turkey is honoured at this quirky festival in the village of Licques, Pas-de-Calais. Every year, guests flock to the Place de la Mairie to

witness the gang of birds parading through the streets, accompanied by colourfully dressed chaperones. It’s not all about turkey-ogling, however (although that is the highlight); you can also enjoy wine, cheese and other bites from the gourmet food market to get into the spirit. Do try the Licquoise – a liqueur brewed in a giant cauldron! December 2018

Fête des Lumières
The Festival of Lights sees Lyon shapeshift into a playground of light and colour as iconic buildings, such as the Cathédrale Saint-Jean, are lit up in honour of the Virgin Mary. This annual celebration stems from 1852, when the golden Virgin Mary statue was installed atop the basilica on Fourvière Hill. The inauguration was delayed by a flood and storms, but the weather settled on the eve of December 8, which residents marked by gratefully lining the fronts of their homes with candles. The tradition has been upheld on the 8th every year since, and the Festival of Lights is a way to draw even wider attention to the occasion. Carefully orchestrated projections dancing to music across the façades of buildings are sure to put stars in your eyes. December 6-9, 2018
