Introducing Anna Marie The Flynn is thrilled to welcome our new

Executive Director, Anna Marie Gewirtz. Considering Anna Marie’s commitment to community collaboration and outreach, we asked a few of our local partners to help introduce her. These questions fostered a fitting prologue to the Flynn’s next chapter.

Your commitment to building upon the Flynn’s outreach to a more diverse array of constituents is admirable. How can the Flynn conduct this vital work while assuring the programming essential to producing financial viability?

The Flynn is a home for the arts for so many people in this community. Our incredible arts education programs, including FlynnArts’ classes, camps, workshops, student matinees, teacher trainings, and more serve over 38,000 children every year. These programs are only possible because of the very generous support we receive from individuals, corporations and local businesses, foundations, and other grants. In order to continue to grow our outreach, we need to expand and diversify our funding and add more donors to our ranks. I plan on spending a lot of my time fundraising and talking about the work we do for the community, so that we can continue to grow our arts education programs and serve as many students as possible.

Another important part of keeping the Flynn financially viable is expanding earned income, which is currently comprised of ticket sales, rental income, box office revenue, concessions, and fees. I will work with the staff and Board to examine every way possible to bring in new revenue to add to our bottom line. Continuing to balance the budget each year, while maintaining a high standard of quality and diversity in our program offerings, is so important to the long-term sustainability of the organization.

Vicky Smith, King Street Center Executive Director

As an organization grows and shifts, there can be a tendency for the “institution to dampen the inspiration.” How will you keep this from happening?

I think it’s important to establish an organizational culture where every person feels supported, valued, and able to thrive while contributing their best work. I see my role not only as the chief spokesperson and champion for the Flynn’s mission in the community, but also to engage our staff, Board, and key stakeholders in discussions surrounding our future vision. How can we best leverage our resources to maximize our mission? Who is our audience today and what does the audience of tomorrow look like? How can we best serve this community through the arts? How can we partner and collaborate to make a better and stronger Flynn organization and even more vibrant arts community?

My goal is to empower the staff and Board in their respective roles and encourage generative thinking, i.e. not only asking if we are doing things right, but if we are doing the right things. Creating a culture where we can experiment and try new endeavors is very important. We might pilot some new initiatives and ultimately decide they didn’t work, but the learning and institutional growth that can be gained is invaluable. The Flynn is blessed with an extremely talented and dedicated staff. Learning their strengths and talents and not micromanaging their work is going to be essential.
