Boundary change plans could unseat siingMP
FAVERSHAM and Mid Kent MP Helen Whately is facing the prospect of losing her parliamen- tary seat after proposed boundary changeswere passed. Her constituency, which she has
represented since 2015, is to be split into three with other areas taking up its constituent parts. The change is part of govern-
ment plans to cut the number of MPs from650 to 600, but the plans could come in for fierce opposition fromLabour and campaignerswho feel it is unfair. The Boundary Commission for
England said its final report on September 10 took account ofmore than 35,000 comments from the public. A spokesman for Mrs Whately
(pictured) said: “It appears that the Faversham and Mid Kent con- stituencywill be divided into three under the current plans. “But these are still only plans and
nothing has yet been decided. Plus it would have to go to the vote in parliament and that is not neces-

seen as clever and ambitious and was recently given the vice-chair of the Conservative Party with re- sponsibility forwomen. If the commission’s plans are
passed, Jeremy Corbyn would see his Islington North patch split up and former Brexit minister David Davis’ Haltemprice and Howden constituency phased out. Former foreign secretary Boris
Johnson might find his Uxbridge and Ruislip constituency slip into a more Labour leaning district, which would be tough to hang onto, despite a 5,000majority. The shadow Cabinet Officemin-
sarily going to happen either.” The Canterbury constituency
would be re-cast as Favershamand Canterbury,
represented by
Labour’s Rosie Duffield. In a worst case scenario, Mrs
Whately could contest, if selected, the seat at the 2022 general election.

ister, Cat Smith, said the final rec- ommendations amounted to “an undemocratic power grab”. She added: “With no plans to re-
duce the number of ministers, the government is weakening the role of parliament and creating un- precedented levels of executive dominance at the expense of back- benchers, when parliament is meant to be taking back control.”
