Club looks for a name change
THEMote Cricket Club may con- sider changing its name aftermore than 170 years after a slump in playing member numbers and a triple relegation this season. It is nowconsidering a rebranding
toMaidstoneCCorMaidstoneMote CC. TheMoteCC,whichwas founded
in 1857, sufferedone of itsworst sea- sons on record with all three of its senior men’s teams being relegated fromtheir respective leagues. The idea of a name change has
gathered momentum among some members, who feel a radical re-think is nowneeded. In a statement, club committee
memberMark Bristowsaid: "I think somemembers feel it is the bestway of attracting new players in the in- ternet age. “With all the new housing devel-
opments going on in andaroundthe town, the feeling is thatwe could be missing out on new players and members because of our name. “When people search the words
‘Maidstone’ and ‘cricket’ online The Mote doesn't come up. “Calling ourselvesMaidstone CC
or Maidstone Mote CC would at least ensure people new to the area
could find us, even if itwouldn’t go downwellwith the traditionalists. “Obviously, any name change
would go to amembers’ vote.” The club continues to run four
teams on a Saturday, a thriving colts section and Sunday and midweek teams. The club is also seeking a newfirst
team captain, after Alex Fordham's decision to stepdown after six years. The troubles facing some local
cricket clubs are well-documented inDownsMail, withHollingbourne Cricket Club announcing it was pulling out of competitive fixtures this season. Its club spokesman, Ian Gut-
teridge, said: “I’ve been saying for three years that there’s too many clubs – there are just not enough cricketers for all the clubs.” Club officials now use Facebook
to contact others to find teamswith enough available players to give a game. Mr Bristow added: "It's a shame
because the ground, thanks to our new groundsman, is looking the best it has for a while, and off the field we are looking strong. But, on the field, we can't afford to have manymore seasons like this."
