LIVE 24-SEVEN - MUSIC

BEV BEVAN'S CD PICKS SEPTEMBER 2018

Planet Beat – From The Shel Talmy Vaults (Big Beat)

Another collection of recordings produced by the legendary Shel Talmy, an American who had much success with British groups on the UK singles charts in the sixties with classics like The Kinks’ You Really Got Me and The Who’s My Generation.

This selection features a handpicked choice from the remarkable cadre of beat and R&B recordings that Shel Talmy produced or handled between 1964 and 1966. Over half the contents are previously unreleased and some feature a then young and unknown guitar player named Jimmy Page.

I just love the names of the featured ‘beat groups’ here: Sean Buckley and the Breadcrumbs; The First Gear; The Zephyrs; The Untamed; The Presidents; The League Of Gentlemen; The Lancastrians; The Trekkas; The Pathfinders; The Dennisons; The Imp-Acts; The Hearts; The Rising Sons; The Talismen; The Tribe; and Johnny B Great and the Orchids.

I was also in some nattily named groups when at Moseley Grammar School in the early sixties: Rocking Ronnie and the Renegades; Troy Satan and the Hellcats; and Tav Memphis and the Senators!

Janis Ian – Between The Lines (Sony)

The second of five remastered and rereleased CD albums from the superb Janis Ian. Between The Lines is arguably her finest album of all, but they are all well worth having in your collection. Her biggest hit single, At Seventeen, is amongst the tracks here. It sold over a million in America and won two Grammy Awards. The album itself sold half a million copies in the USA and topped the album charts there for one week in September 1975.

The all self-composed songs on this great album are: When The Party’s Over; From Me To You; Bright Lights And Promises; In The Winter; Watercolours; Between The Lines; The Come On; Light A Light; Tea & Sympathy; Lover’s Lullaby; and the aforementioned At Seventeen. “I learned the truth at seventeen. That love was meant for beauty queens and high school girls with clear skinned smiles who married young and then retired. The valentines I never knew. The Friday night charades of youth were spent on one more beautiful. At Seventeen I learned the truth.” Brilliant!
