THE WHITE SPOON CHRIS WHITE IN CHELTENHAM

For those that don’t already know, The White Spoon in Cheltenham is the first independent venture from Chef Director Chris White and his partner Purdey Spooner (hence the name, The White Spoon). Chris has a fantastic pedigree - a protégé of Heston Blumenthal and former chef at The Fat Duck, this guy clearly knows his food and we couldn’t be happier that he has chosen to bring his talents to Cheltenham.


Chris’s style is all about bringing local, seasonal ingredients to the table through dishes which are primarily British, with a few flavour influences from around the globe added for good measure. The White Spoon is relaxed, welcoming and distinctly unpretentious, yet the interior oozes laid-back contemporary luxe-cool – think reclaimed wood, copper pipe wall lights, stone-effect tableware and a natural colour palette.


The White Spoon offers an exceptionally well priced set menu lunchtimes and early evenings so it made perfect sense to give it a whirl. As an appetiser, we chose the plant pot bread served with Applewood smoked


butter. The butter, like everything else, is made in house and the taste was phenomenal, particularly when combined with the aniseed flavour from the fennel seeds atop the bread.


I chose not to have a starter, but Adam had the Isle of Wight tomato salad. It was beautifully presented with cubes of balsamic jelly, crunchy basil granola and a bloody mary sorbet. Fortunately, Adam was in a sharing mood and offered me a generous forkful of this tasty dish.


Moving on to the main event, I opted for the Wild Garlic Risotto with parmesan and preserved lemon; the sharp lemon cut through the rich creaminess and prevented it from being too heavy. Simply delicious.


Adam’s aged Dexter beef burger with mushroom ketchup with triple cooked chips must have been good as I didn’t get a look in despite eyeing up his light and fluffy brioche bun.


Dessert was an easy choice; gingerbread ice cream in a waffle cone with tender forced rhubarb served two ways.The poached rhubarb complemented the ginger perfectly as did the tart rhubarb mousse underneath; overall a tangy, sweet, soft yet sharp taste explosion – it was THAT good I don’t think I spoke to Adam once.


We left with full bellies, contented and happy – not in any small part due to the fantastic service we had received. There is something special about The White Spoon and we will definitely be returning very soon.
