physical sight of office and residential developments currently reaching up into the town’s skies.

Since the Green Park wind turbine and The Blade town-centre office complex revealed their dramatic and iconic shapes, major Reading development has increasingly been moving up in the world (yes, that’s a pun).

The Blade at 14 floors and 86m/282ft is Reading’s tallest building, but other high-rise projects are imminently arriving or being planned for the town:

• Verto, an 18-storey luxury 103-apartment complex with landscaped roof terraces overlooking the Kennet waterside is almost here. Completing this autumn, Verto has replaced the long-term Kings Point eyesore at the Kings Road-Forbury Road junction with the town’s highest residential development.

• By 2021, that highest title may be claimed by Thames Quarter – a 22-storey development at the former BMW/Cooper site by Reading Bridge. A Lochailort/M & G Real Estate/Watkin Jones development partnership will create Reading’s first build-to-rent

scheme with 315 apartments, a 24-hour concierge, private dining rooms, cinema and lounges, a tech hub, and rooftop terraces.

In January, Reading Borough Council approved a residential reworking by London and Quadrant

of the current Homebase and Toys R Us sites off Kenavon Drive, opposite the former Reading Prison. The 765 home mixed-use scheme includes an 11-storey building, a Kennet riverside square, shops, eateries and a nursery.

Continued overleaf ... Verto under construction

Creating exceptional workplaces for businesses in Reading and the wider Thames Valley
