MidGlos Indoor Bowls Club in Brockworth are on the up after nearly closing in 2017.
An emergency meeting was called and the then committee called for a vote to close. A fairly new member David Crisp (me) was asked by a number of members to intervene. When stopping the meeting, the old committee resigned and left, leaving David to hold a new vote to stay open. Two hundred members attended and unanimously supported the action.
Established at Brockworth since 2000, with the help of Lottery money, the club now has to look forward to rebuilding a lot of negative rumours.
We have had to make staff redundant to reduce outgoings. Very sad but necessary for survival. There are over thirty volunteers now helping to cover bar, cleaning and kitchen duties. We are looking for someone to run their own Catering business.
The premature meeting caused a number of members in excess of sixty to leave. We are now getting many new members along with most of those that left, saying they are coming back for the new season in September. This is when the outdoor players come back indoors for the winter.
More good news is that funding for a new carpet and heating is secured. Along with private members monies being able to having just purchased the land that the club sits on. Securing the future of the club. Things are going very well, but there is a lot of work to still to do.
Bowls is perceived as “an old mans game”, but this is not the case. Around the world the age groups are dropping, teens, 20s, 30s etc. It just doesn’t get the right press.
