Those characteristics meant the town was the perfect link between the mining industry and rail and coastal transport, and so those fortunes were created.

The grand villas designed by the famous architect Henry Rice dominate the townscape, a townscape visited by Charles Dickens and his writer friend Wilkie Collins on their tour of Britain.

There's a Henry Rice Trail you can follow to find out more about the great designer.

Today, drive, take the bus or walk just a few miles north of the town, and you are among the

haunting landscapes of Bodmin Moor, marked first by nature in the beautiful tors and the stunning rock formations of places like Sharp Tor or the Hurlers at Minions.

Then shaped by prehistoric man, with his enigmatic monuments such as Trethevy Quoit near Darite or The Hurlers, again at Minions; then marked for ever by the ingenuity of the Cornish people who fuelled Britain's Victorian Industrial Revolution, with distinctive mine engine houses dotting the skyline.

And right in the middle is Liskeard itself, a destination in its own right.

The bustling town offers a host of excellent hotels, cafes and restaurants for refreshments and accommodation; a brilliant museum where one of the favourite exhibitions has focused on the toys of yesteryear; the

historic Stuart House, which once sheltered King Charles I; and a fascinating range of shops which include antiques and curios, antiquarian and new books, superb Cornish-made arts and crafts, fantastic Cornish-produced food and much more.

Liskeard also has one end of one of Britain's most famous and best-loved rail lines, the Liskeard to Looe Branch line, winding its way through the scenic beauty of the Looe Valley to its seaside destination.
