FLICKS’ MICHAEL J. CARR This 29-year old Brooklyn Native has a busy

DANCING THRU PRIDE

Pride Week planned.Michael J. Carr will not only be behind the Bar atFlicks, but also on the Main Stage during the San Diego Pride Festival. The Rage Monthly sat down with him to find out more about him and his Pride plans.

Tell us what brought you to the West Coast? The Marine Corps brought me to San Diego. I was

an Aviation Logistics Information Management Systems Specialist (ALIMS) for short, but in other words pretty much Geek Squad for the air wing. What was that like? Were you out in the Marines? I didn’t fully come out to my close friends in my

unit until my final year in the Marines and they were all cool with it. Funny thing is their wives knew but they had no idea. We all still text and message each other with updates and stories of times passed. A few of them actually came to San Diego for Memorial Day weekend and surprised me here at Flicks. I haven’t seen these guys in years and it was like we never have been apart. How did you get your start at Flicks? I got my start go-go dancing on the bar. Flicks

hired me as a bar-back through a friend who actually was in the same unit in the Marines.

What do you enjoy in your spare time? I’m in the Diamond Dogs, which is an all-male

burlesque group and we perform at shows all over San Diego. In Hillcrest, we also have our monthly show every third Thursday at The Merrow. You can also catch us on the main stage of the San Diego Pride Festival, opening for TLC with the Dreamers Project and some of San Diego’s best drag queens. What are you looking forward to most during Pride at Flicks? I’m looking forward to getting my hands on

one of the limited edition Stoli Harvey Milk Bottles of vodka! Also, meeting new people coming to San Diego to celebrate and making new connections… preferably private ones! Like everyone in the industry, I hope to make lots of money. (Laughs) Please tell us about the Flicks staff.

I can sum it up in just one word: Family. We are

truly blessed to have each other in our lives and look to each other for inspiration, good times, and advice. The owner Jeff is like our papa bear here. I remember him telling a story about how he used to participate in the “Dating Game” here at Flicks years ago, so he could afford to eat using the gift cards given to the contestants. Tell me about your regular customers. I feel our customers are just as close to us as

we are to each other. I love having our Flicks regulars and treating them as the extended family they are. We laugh and cry together, and we genuinely care for one another.

FLICKS is located at 1017 University Avenue in Hillcrest. For more information visit facebook.com/FlicksSD or go to sdflicks.com.
