ready for delivery in early fall. An interesting couple of repowers took
place at Goudy & Stevens in East Booth- bay on the sardine carriers CONQUEROR (built Maurice Dow, Jonesport, 1911) and SYLVINA W. BEAL (built East Boothbay, 1911), owned by R. J. Peacock Canning Co., of Portland. They were repowered with twin screw gasoline engines and were the fi rst to be powered this way. They each were given a pair of 140-hp Chrysler Royal engines with 4.48:1 reduction gears, 3 inch shaft and a 36 x 32 Columbian propeller. The engines have universal joints between the crank and tail shafts, which will allow for changes in shape when loaded or light. At Reed Brothers Shipyard in Boothbay
Harbor they have two lobster boats under construction. Arthur W. Stetson of Cape Porpoise is having a 35 footer built and Fred Fossett of Spruce Point is getting a 30 footer. They will soon start a 26 footer for Albert McLellan of Bath. The John Prince Story yard in Essex
launched the 92-foot redfi sh dragger ST. PETER II for Capts. Benjamin and Sam Favazza of Gloucester. She is powered with a 300-hp Atlas diesel giving her a speed of 10 knots.
Newbert & Wallace launched the 92-
foot dragger ALOHA for Joseph Dolan of Guilford, CT on 28 July. She was designed by Albert E. Condon and is full-bodied with a short end or semi-cruiser stern. The design was originally for an 89 footer, but they added two frames on 18 inch centers. They also changed the steering gear, added a steel bridge with steps, an electric 5-hp fi sh hoist, and an escape/ventilation hatch. She has accommodations for eight in the forecastle and one in the captain’s quarters in the deck house. She is powered with 250-hp Atlas diesel.
At Bristol Yacht Building Co. in South
Bristol they have six boats under construc- tion: a 26 footer for Capt. Willis Gilbert of New Harbor; a 35 footer, Capt. Sam Morton, New Harbor; 35 foot seine boat for Capt. Lenword Brackett, New Harbor; 30 foot lobster boat, Capt. Chris Nickerson, Monhe- gan; 28 footer, Capt. Walter Brackett, New Harbor; and a 26 foot lobster boat, Capt. Ernest Cushing, Pemaquid Beach. At the Morse Boatbuilding Co. in Tho-
maston they launched the 101-foot dragger VIRGINIA for John Dallett of New York City in late July. She was the largest ves- sel they had built. She had a raked stem, whaleback, large deckhouse and square transom. For accommodations she as eight berths in the forecastle, two aft and one in the captain’s quarters. She is powered with a 300-hp Union diesel with a 56-inch Hyde propeller. The yard was also rebuilding and repowering KATIE D., also owned by John Dallett. She will be getting a 300-hp Union diesel.
Another repower was on the lobster
smack SATELLITE, owned by the Consol- idated Lobster Co. of Gloucester. She was getting a 134-hp Cummins, with a 3:1 Cap- itol gear, and a 40 x 28 Columbian propeller. Antone Arruda and New Bedford inter-
ests have three 90-foot draggers building at Bristol Yacht Building Co., South Bristol. They will be powered with 400-hp Enter- prise diesels. The yard also was building an 85 foot dragger for Capt. Jens Larson and Antone Arruda. A 32-foot dragger, DOLORES, was
built at Flyer’s Boat Shop at Provincetown and launched on 21 July for Manuel Lema. She is powered with a 40-hp Bridgeport engine. Waldoboro Shipyard in Waldoboro is
nearing completion on a 77 foot dragger for John Bruno of Boston, powered with a 155
hp Atlas diesel. The yard also had the keel laid for an 85 foot dragger for Capt. Sylves- ter Ferrigno of Cambridge, MA. The design of this vessel is new and was developed by the yard. Capt. Donald Joyce of Rockport had
taken delivery of the 65-foot dragger AL- THEA JOYCE from the Bristol Yacht Build- ing Co. She was a new model designed by the yard with a full hull and round stern. She has the capacity for 75,000 pounds of fi sh and can accommodate six in the forecastle and one in the deck house. She is powered with a 152-hp Superior diesel, 4 inch bronze shaft, 3:1 gear and a 46 x 34 Columbian propeller. On 25 August Waldoboro Shipyard
launched the 77-foot dragger CATHERINE B. for John Bruno of Boston. She was the same design as LITTLE NANCY with an 18 foot beam and 9 foot 6 inch draft. She as a capacity of 110,000 pounds of fi sh and accommodations for eight in the forecastle, one in the pilothouse and one off the engine room. She is powered with a 155-hp Atlas diesel. It was also stated that the yard a 42- foot dry-well lobster smack under construc- tion for Capt. Ernest J. Burns of Friendship. She would be powered with a Chrysler Royal engine. One design feature was being built down with a straight rabbit and another is the tapered after end of the keel to allow easier water fl ow to the propeller.
