Maidstone Four in five people say volunteering boosts health
Volunteering boosts employability, self-esteem and health, according to a report published by Citizens Advice.
• The report also reveals that 6 in 10 people who give their time to the Citizens Advice service feel less stressed as a result.
• Four in 5 people believe volunteering has had a positive effect on their health. • 90% of people who volunteer find an increased sense of purpose or self-esteem, feel more engaged in their community and feel beter equipped and empowered to deal with issues in their lives.
• In 2017/18, 85 Volunteers gave up their time in Citizens Advice Maidstone, helping 9,766 clients to solve 35,731 problems.
Citizens Advice Maidstone is calling on people to pledge their support for free and impartial advice.
One Citizens Advice volunteer, Julia, became an apprentice with Citizens Advice whilst also undertaking a qualification. Two years later Julia leſt the bureau aſter geting a job in the health sector:
“I suffered severely with depression; I was successful with a good job, house, car and my independence. Unfortunately, aſter a long period of illness I lost my self-esteem, I then volunteered at my local Citizens Advice. With help and guidance from staff, I started to rebuild my confidence and consequently, my life, whilst giving vital support to a much needed charity which provides a desperately needed service.”
“I found opportunities varied, meeting and helping people from all walks of life. Volunteer- ing helped me to turn my life around; I have seen many volunteers move on to employment helped by the experience gained from volunteering.”
Bonny Malhotra, Chief Officer of Citizens Advice Maidstone, said:
“Volunteers are the lifeblood of our Organisation they make a huge contribution to the local community, helping to support approximately 10,000 people each year when they need it the most. Now, these figures reveal the benefits that volunteers can expect to see themselves.”
