Who the Hell am I!? I
’m Sean Bruce, owner of South of Heaven Tattoos, hus- band, and father of 5. Tis is how my career as a tattoo artist started:
As far back as I can remember, I loved to sit and draw. I was
always attracted to “shock value” art, such as skateboard art, punk rock, and metal art. I drew on paper, and I drew on myself and my friends at school, much to the disapproval of the teachers. Tey tried to convince me that I’d get ink poisoning from markers and pens on my skin. I did not heed their warnings, nor did I die of ink poi- soning, so they were wrong. Fast-forward to my early 20’s.

I had recently moved out on my own. Well, my parents “encour- aged” me to move out by packing my belongings and finding me a small apartment on my 18th birthday. Ironically, this apart- ment sits two doors down from my shop – I never would have imagined! Back at the apartment, friends often stopped by my place and asked me to design their tat- toos (which I did for free). Tey would then take the designs to
tattoos shops and pay an artist to get my drawings tattooed on them. It didn’t, take me long to realize that I was in the wrong line of work! It was time to cut out the middle man and do the job myself. I had to put the wheels in motion, so my first stop was at
a local street shop, where I was offered an apprenticeship. I spent the next year doing everything BUT tattooing – learn- ing the trade, answering phones, making needles, cleaning up after everyone. At the same time, I immersed myself in art books, and anything and everything tattoo-related that I could get my hands on, all the while amassing a huge col- lection of books, magazines, and videos. I worked at a couple of shops along the way, but it soon
became apparent to me that I prefer to be my own boss, so I scraped together all my savings and opened up my own place. I named the shop after one of my all-time favorite songs : South of Heaven. Te shop was born. Te next step was finding suitable
staff, which can be easier said than done. We had to do a bit of weeding, but the end result is a group of amazing people
