Make-over in the towncentre

THE third phase of Maidstone town centre’smulti-million pound make-over is set to start next month. The borough council will be re-

vealing the contractors for the eight- month facelift to Gabriel’s Hill and Week Street and details of the in- evitable disruption to retailers and shoppers. It follows an online consultation,

including a video on YouTube, set- ting out the shape of things to come in two of the town’s most historic streets, linking Maidstone East sta- tion and the oldGranada cinema to the town centre. Paving and granite sets used in the High Street will be introduced

to provide continuity of design and a level surface, with a price tag of around £2m. The council says the design draws

on Maidstone’s rich heritage, with squares at key junctions, such as Iguanodon Square, at St Faith’s Street, celebrating the nearby mu- seumand the discovery of dinosaur bones in the town. A“Hollywoodwalk of fame”will
