Memorial cross safe in church until shaft fixed
THEwarmemorial cross has been returned to Bearsted parish church, as requested. The centrepiece has been allo-
cated a designated place inside Holy Cross while the parish coun- cil finds the best way to fix the monument. Sarah Lewis, clerk of Bearsted
Parish Council, which is responsi- ble for thememorial, is stillwaiting for news on the repairs required before calling for tenders. The work could potentially cost
upwards of £25,000. The cross had to be removed to
make the structure safe but the heat is on to have it repaired in time for November’s commemorations of the end ofWorldWar One. As well as a severe crack in the
shaft, it was showing signs of ad- vanced deterioration, said Mrs Lewis. Cllr RichardAsh said: “It is obvi-
ously a very big year for war me- morials in 2018 and it is important that ourmemorial looks the part.” Cllr Ash said the stone used in

Mrs Lewis said: “There is a lot of
hard work going on behind the scenes to ensure that whatever we do is done properly and in a timely manner, aswell as providing value for publicmoney. “It has always been understood
