adds diversity to the commercial mix in the area, creates new jobs and economic investment." Kalmar USA Inc. is a market leader in cargo-handling equipment, port automation and services. One in four containers moved around the globe is being handled by a Kalmar USA Inc. solutions.

"Kalmar's strategic decision to locate in the City of Portsmouth allows the company to leverage the growth at The Port of Virginia and the expanding maritime cargo industry in the harbor," said John F. Reinhart, CEO and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority.

"We have 16 Kalmar USA Inc. shuttle carriers being delivered to the Virginia International Gateway over the next two months to help support our capacity expansion project there, so it will be to our advantage to have them as a neighbor. Most importantly, the decision brings jobs and economic investment to our region and the Commonwealth."

Kalmar USA Inc.'s Portsmouth location will specifically be used for repairing cranes, spreaders and other industrial equipment. The Miller Group will be doing the build- out of the property. "The Miller Group is extremely pleased to have an industry leader such as Kalmar locate at 3115 Watson Street. Kalmar is a great win for the city and will add to the rich history of Portsmouth as a port community," stated Jerry Miller, The Miller Group CEO. The Miller Group will manage the construction and asset on behalf of Ellicott 77 LLC. Kalmar USA Inc. is the industry forerunner in port automation and energy-efficient cargo handling. Its innovation led the company to develop the first industrial straddle carrier in the 1940s and the first RoRo tractor in the 1970s. To meet the need for more efficient container handling, Kalmar commercialized the first generation of reach-stackers in the 80s and a decade later introduced the first container handler for rough terrain operations. These innovations and others revolutionized the cargo and container handling industries.

Cedar Hill Cemetery Closure

The Cedar Hill Cemetery, located at 326 North Main Street, will be closed until further notice to all foot and vehicle traffic due to a number of downed trees caused by heavy winds.

This closure is necessary to repair damages and to prevent injury as further damages may occur while there are still gusts of high winds. The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook and High Wind Warning through Saturday morning.

This closure is expected to last until approximately Wednesday, March 7, 2018, so that paths may be cleared and damages assessed and repaired. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause for those who wish to visit loved ones’ graves.

Should you have any questions, please call Sheril Davenport, Cemetery Superintendent, at 757-514-7632.

February 21, 2018 Dear Hampton Roads Families:

Following last week’s school shooting in Florida, we all have experienced a wide range of emotions from shock and sorrow to anger that something like this could happen. Schools are a place where children deserve to learn free from fear.

The responsibility of keeping our schools safe belongs to everyone. In these times of heightened awareness, schools, parents, staff and the community at-large must remain ever vigilant in our efforts.

As you know, we have many security measures in place in our schools across Hampton Roads. In addition, as superintendents of the region, we are joining together with local police agencies to address disturbing social media posts or comments made that could be perceived as a threat. Any threat made against any one of our schools – even those made “as a joke” – will have serious repercussions, including potential criminal charges and a possible recommendation for expulsion from school.

We are reinforcing this message with students and we need your help at home. We all have a responsibility to treat information regarding school safety with caution; the oversharing of misinformation in most cases will create problems, not prevent them. We ask that any social media or other threat be reported directly to law enforcement and school officials, rather than shared through social media channels. Quite simply, if you hear or see something, say something.

We also encourage parents and caregivers to monitor students' online activity and to employ these strategies:

 Know what websites and social media sites your child is using. Look at what they are posting and who they are following.  Stress that making a threat is not to be taken lightly and that there are severe consequences.  Talk with your child about recent local and national incidents. Explain that feelings such as sadness, anger, disappointment, and fear can be normal responses to tragedies for children and adults.

 Watch for changes in behavior and seek help if your child needs assistance dealing with anxiety or feeling safe.  Contact your child's school and law enforcement if you believe your child is capable of making a threat and following through.  Keep an open line of communication with your children and encourage them to tell you or another trusted adult if they become aware of a threat or rumor of violence.

Working together at school and at home, we can and will make a difference for our children and our community. You place your trust in us each and every day. As superintendents, we have no greater responsibility than to educate our children in a safe environment where they can learn and grow, without carrying the weight of fear and anxiety on their shoulders.

Thank you in advance for partnering with us in this important work and for your assistance in keeping our children and communities safe.
