BAYARD RUSTIN CIVIL RIGHTS HONORS Bayard Rustin grew up in the tradition of civil rights work and furthered social causes throughout his life. His belief in non-violent, civil disobedience won him the allegiance of Martin Luther King and indeed set Rustin on the course for becoming the Civil Rights Movement’s lead strategist for from 1955 to 1968 and a key organizer for 1963’s “March on Washington” at which Rev. King delivered his legendary “I Have a Dream Speech.” Vilified by many of his peers for being “openly homosexual,” Rustin’s belief in social justice for all, including the LGBT community, continued until his death in 1987. Posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama, for his legacy of activism, social justice and non-violent protest, Rustin’s legacy is testimony to what one person can achieve against great odds. In that tradition, the San Diego LGBT Center and The Imperial Court de San Diego recognizes outstanding community leadersTamanava Eden, Rickie Brown, Ondra CampbellandIan Morton with theBayard Rustin Civil Rights Honors, and offer theLifetime Achievement AwardtoCity of San Diego Council President, Myrtle Cole. The celebration takes place at the San Diego LGBT Center onFriday, February 23 and your $10 donation includes a soul food buffet benefitting The N.M.R Scholarship Fund, The Harvey Milk Scholarship Fund and The National Bayard Rustin U.S. Postage Stamp Campaign.
