BC Agriculture in the Classroom executive director Pat Tonn was all smiles after receiving a cheque for $20,000 from BC Youth in Agriculture Foundation chair Bob Brandsma, left, and Pacific National Exhibition controller Roger Gil during the annual PNE Ag Auction, August 31.

Auction proceeds benefit education, 4-H programs

by DAVID SCHMIDT VANCOUVER – The BC

Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation (AITC) and BC 4-H were the main beneficiaries of the 2016 Pacific National Exhibition Ag Auction. The BC Youth in Agriculture Foundation (BCYiAF) began this year’s auction proceedings August 31 by disbursing the more than $40,000 raised last year. Almost half went to AITC,

which received $20,000 to support its harvest bins and educational programs. BC 4-H was the other major beneficiary, receiving $16,500 for its 4-H Ambassador program and other initiatives. Several of the 4-H Ambassadors were in attendance to assist with the auction and sell lottery animals. Delta Farmland & Wildlife

Trust received $2,000 to fund its Day on the Farm while three youth each received $2,000 scholarships. They included Nikki Meier, winner of the Ian Paton Memorial Scholarship. Paton’s son, Ian Jr., who succeeded his father as a member of the PNE’s Agriculture Advisory Committee, was on hand to present the scholarship and conduct the auction. His position on the AAC is just one of many hats Paton wears; he is also a Delta councillor and won Delta South for the BC Liberals in the last provincial election. The BC Liberals also recently named

him agriculture co-critic in the legislature. The ag auction began

several decades ago as an auction of prize-winning eggs from the PNE egg

competition, raising money for such charities as the Variety Club. However, in recent years, the eggs have disappeared, replaced by concert and sporting event tickets, holiday getaways and

other gift packages from the PNE and many of its corporate sponsors. Auction proceeds are also now directed to the BCYiAF which in turn directs them to various programs that support youth in agriculture. With excellent weather, a dazzling array of live and silent auction items, the 2017 auction was able to raise over $33,500 for BCYiAF.
