United Arab Emirates I have just returned froma trip to the UAE, specifically Dubai and Ras al‐Khaimah, so I thought it prudent for this edion of my travel piece to be about that region! Chrisna Pegler


Dubai is a place which most people have an opinion on, whether they have been there or not….it is perceived to be a glitzy, high rise, hot, busy city in the middle of the desert. This is not far fromthe truth, but there is a lot more to Dubai. The weather is prey much guaranteed sunshine, the sea is warm and the service is excellent. The hotels are beauful, very clean and up to 7*. There is sll an old part to Dubai, the creek where the dhows sll sail (albeit mostly for tourists), but the back drop is modern. Ras al‐Khaimah is the northernmost Emirates state and very different fromDubai. It is the only state which has sea, desert and mountains. It is around an hour’s drive from Dubai airport (the same amount of me it takes to get to Jumeirah Beach or The Palm in Dubai), but it has a totally different feel about it. Ras al‐Khaimah is an area being developed into a beach resort, but with low


rise hotels, lots of space and a much more relaxed atude than Dubai. There are currently 13 hotels, all of an excellent standard, including the Waldorf Astoria, the best hotel in the area.


You can go climbing in the mountains here; the temperature is around 10 degrees lower in the mountains, so it can offer welcome respite. The longest zip line in the world is currently being built and is due to open in December 2017 and you can sll do the dune safaris, desert experiences and owl and falcon shows in RAK. All of the hotels in RAK also offer a shule bus service to Dubai, if you want to go to the shopping malls or the Burj Khalifa, so you don’t need to miss out if you


decide not to stay in Dubai. Prices in RAK are around 30% lower than in Dubai and the hotels are equally as good, but with much more space! The weather in the UAE gets very hot fromMay to October, but is pleasant for the rest of the year with temperatures averaging around 25 degrees in the winter. Geng to Dubai is very easy, withmany flights going daily fromGatwick and Heathrow, with a flight me of around 7 hours and many of the flights on the Airbus A380 (Emirates). Visas (for Brish passport holders) and inoculaons are not required for the UAE, which makes travel very easy.
