is ‘inadequate’ A DOCTORS’ surgery in Maid- stone has been placed in special measures to safeguard patients. It follows an inspection by the

Care Quality Commission, which rated the Albion Medical Practice in Albion Place ‘inadequate’ in terms of safety and leadership. The inspector also said the GP surgery, run by Dr Peter Szwedziuk and Dr Annmarie Keeley, needed to im- prove its effectiveness and re- sponse to patients’ needs. Janet Williamson, the CQC’s

deputy chief inspector of General Practice, said: “As a result of this in- spection in July,we have placedAl- bion Place Medical Practice into special measures and have also is- sued two requirement notices.” While staffwere ‘good’ at caring,

the practice’s overall ratingwas in- adequate. The surgerywasmarked down in a number of areas, includ- ing: not having an effectivelyman- aged system for

recording

significant events and failing to keep patients sufficiently safe from abuse and medicine mix-ups. The inspector also criticised the practice for not always assessing and man- aging risks to patients in an effec- tive and timely manner and for having an unreliable system of recording samples sent for the cer- vical screening programme. Mrs Williamson confirmed the

CQC will re-inspect the practice within the next six months and added: “If we find that the service provided by this surgery remains inadequate, wewill take further ac- tion.”

Kent’s gritters ‘are ready’

ASWE start to feel the first chills of winter in Kent, the county council has been busy dusting off its gritting lorries to ensure they are ready for action. The drivers of Kent’s 60 gritters

and fivemini-gritters have been taken through the 53 primary salting routes, covering 1,600 miles, and will now remain on standby. Kent County Council claims to

salt about a third of Kent’s road network, which includes A and B roads as well as strategic and locally important roads. A stock of 21,000 tonnes of salt has been set aside for the job at six depots across the county. As well as 2,000 or so salt bins,

the county council contracts 117 farmers to snowplough 208 rural routes in the event of heavy snow, but states it is unable to salt pavements. KCC’s cabinetmember

for transport,Matthew Balfour, said: “Itmight seemearly to be thinking about winter but freezing conditions can strike early. While we’re confident we’re prepared, I’d

urge everyone tomake sure they’re ready for the wintermonths, too.” To helpmotorists,@grittingkent
