Hampton Roads in Newport News, and he’s now pulling together support to replace the very court on which he grew up playing basketball.


“The Club was one of the only places in my neighborhood that had a gym,” said Iverson. “I learned so much in that gym, beyond how to play ball.”


The Club is now more


than 60 years old, serving as a safe haven for nearly 100 youth each


day, and thousands of


youth and teens since it opened. A major asset to the Club is its gymnasium, which is used for community tournaments, open court sessions, private rentals, and then by Club members each day. The court serves as more than a recreation space and is critical for the downtown community, which lacks workout spaces and gyms.


Unfortunately, the current


floor is composed of VCT tile with concrete underneath. The tiles are faded and popping up, creating an unstable floor. Additionally, the concrete underneath


creates a harsh


landing surface bad for joints, which can lead to “jumper’s knee,” or patellar tendinitis.

In 2015, the company came under


fire when Harvard researchers reported widespread discrimination by Airbnb hosts.

Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) recently held its 46th Annual Life Membership Awards Banquet. The theme for the evening was “Steadfast and Immovable.” Jorsene Cooper, who served as the banquet chair, said in a letter printed in the banquet souvenir booklet, “We must show the world that we stand for justice and we will not stop our fight for equality for all.”

Dr. E. Faye Williams. Dr. Williams spoke about her close friendship with the late Dick Gregory. She said that she was in the room with Gregory when he “closed his eyes for the last time.” Williams is a former professor of International Law at the Southern University School of Law. She is the current National Chair of the National Congress of Black Women.
