40/ OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2017 THE RIDER Central Ontario Welcomes Pony Club Nationals Central Ontario welcomed the nation this

past August for Pony Club’s National Rally. Keen members from British Columbia’s lower main- land, Saskatchewan, Western Ontario, Nova Sco- tia and of course the host region competed at the Entry and Pre-Training levels. Riders – who are tested to a minimum C level and ranged in age from 16 to 23 – had a chance to school on the flat, over jumps and in the derby field on horses lent by local supporters before participating in a com- bined test of Dressage and Show Jumping. Each team consisted of two riders, plus a groom and a captain, who all had turns going over the jumps. In addition to the riding competition, teams were also assessed on their Stable Management skills. Saskatchewan’s team took first place in Stable Management, while the team from Nova Scotia was the champion overall team.

In July 2018, Central Ontario will have a

chance to host another Pony Club National Cham- pionship: Dressage. Members from across Canada will be competing at Training, First and Second levels. In addition to performing Test 1 and Test 2 for their level, riders also have a Mystery Test that they are provided with only a few minutes be- fore they go into the ring. This allows for a true demonstration of each rider’s skills, especially since participants ride borrowed horses for the event. Organizers look forward to receiving offers from those in the Barrie area who might like to have their horse included in the pool. With its offering of education in horseman-

ship paired with access to meaningful competi- tion, Pony Club continues to be the foundation upon which young equestrians can develop. To find out more about becoming involved with Pony

Club as a youth member, volunteer, sponsor or Horsemaster (yes, adults can join Pony Club, too!),
