Canadians Host the Eighth Internati
Gathering future sport horse breeders in one venue every other year to compete in an international young breeders competition isn’t easy. Most young people want to ride, and then ride some more. Analyzing horse conformation, showing horses in hand, judging free jumping and taking theory exams are not what most horse-crazy girls and guys have in mind.
Society (AHS) and KWPN-NA (Dutch Warmbloods)—partici- pated with their youth in this biennial worldwide cham- pionship competition for young breeders held at Spruce Meadows in Calgary, Alberta. Officially, it is called the Inter- national Young Breeders World Championships. With a total of 111 competitors, ages 16 to 19 for Juniors and 20 to 25 for Seniors, 16 European and North American studbooks converged on Calgary to face the challenge held July 20-22. North America, and the Canadians were up to the challenge. Cassandra Morrish of the CWHBA, the event’s head orga- nizer, says it was a huge amount of work to coordinate every- thing, including finding all the demo horses needed. (They were supplied by local Canadian breeders and farms.) In the end, the event was a hit for the young men and women who attended, and more importantly, they had fun.
