slow-moving clouds that soon turn brighter. Mist still floats over the mountainside but now I can see parts of the valley again for the first time in days. Eventually, the ocean appears and soon after, I can clearly see the island of Cebu. The typhoon is over.

Now birds are twittering excitedly, while other mountain species join them rejoicing in the return to normality. Soon for the first time in days, I hear scooters puttering down from the mountainside higher than where I live. I welcome the exhilarating sounds of children squealing in delight while their parents talk simultaneously.

These simple acts are joyful to my ear.

I feel nauseated when I hear mountain climbers, after summiting, boast about “conquering the mountain”. The glorious mountain will exist long after we insignificant people are dust. I cringe when I hear scientists arrogantly claim to have conquered Natures’ secrets. I sigh when

I read of well- intentioned environmentalists begging for us to “save the planet.” They have nothing to fear. Long after homo sapiens, theoretically the most evolved of all species, has finally destroyed itself and all other life forms on earth, this planet will still turn on its axis, the sun will still rise in the east, and as surely, will set in the west.

And in a few million years, barely a millisecond in the measurement of time, our planet will eventually restore itself to its original magnificent beauty, but this time without the destructive force of man to darken the horizon.

Fish Conservation Week

“This is an important celebration to highlight the importance of fisheries for food security, while emphasizing to our people that we have to

conserve our marine resources now,” BFAR Central Visayas Regional Director Dr. Allan Poquita was quoted as saying. BFAR also launched the Cebuano primer on the Fisheries Code as amended by RA 10654 in collaboration with Oceana. The primer highlights the salient points of the amended Fisheries Code, including provisions on vessel monitoring, Citizen’s Suits and Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPP), Oceana said. component in various studies in the country’s major curricula. In a holistic sense, MAPEH can be a tool in achieving a healthy mind, body and soul. Its integration is premised on various regional and international developments on education, initiatives that have actually become compelling reasons why the country has to enhance its basic and higher education architecture. However, most students nowadays are taking MAPEH for granted for no obvious reasons.

M

It is imperative that MAPEH be given preferential attention by the students, the academe, parents, and the society this time. The resisting behavior of most

students towards the subject is becoming obvious. The notions that MAPEH is just an added element in the curriculum and thus become burden and that it is a very easy subject should now be addressed squarely. This has to change in order for the subject to receive appreciation like any major subject in school. MAPEH embraces all elements geared towards the overall development of a learner. It provides a venue for the students to do physical activities to promote healthy mind and body. Furthermore, MAPEH allows students to express their arty selves, provides them the avenue to do physical activities and thus grow physically healthy and provides them insights how to safeguard their health. Through MAPEH, the sports skills and artistic

talents of the students can be enhanced through training and developmental workshop thus, providing them opportunities to be in higher plane of sports or venue for arts. As a result, students may be able to establish good relationship with their peers on top of learning and enjoying the various physical and arts activities. Without any doubt, parents, teachers and the community must institute a collective effort to encourage and promote MAPEH to their students, not just an alternative learning tool, but also a subject that is equally important to that of any major subject for all discipline. Superlative effort must be done not tomorrow, but today. (Roland D. Labe, Pamplona National High School)

the region is 1,860 MW and so there is a reserve of some 339 MW, way above the required 150MW contingency reserve, Labios explained. Geothermal is the biggest contributor of energy in the Visayas, with sources in Palinpinon, Negros Oriental and Tongonan, Leyte, according to Director Labios, apparently referring to the geothermal power plants of the Energy Development Corporation (EDC) in these areas. EDC generates 701MW

for Leyte and 222.5 MW for Negros.

than 50 percent of the power requirement is supplied by geothermal, with coal generating about 25 to 30 percent.

According to him, more

Solar power has around 300MW capacity in Negros Island alone, however, this cannot be totally relied on it is not baseload power and is a variable source. It does not work 24/7

as it is dependent on the availability of the sun, that is why there are some people who want to invest in storage facilities to store energy from solar that can be used at nighttime, he added.

When asked on what to do with the excess solar energy in Negros which is off grid, Dir. Labios admitted that transmission facilities is another problem even though sometimes there may be excess power in the region.

The National Grid Corporation of the Phi l ippines

the country’s power transmission company, has plans to upgrade their connectivity, Labios disclosed, such as connecting Toledo in Cebu to San Carlos in Negros Occidental. If there is excess power either way, then it can be transferred to an area that needs more, he said. Meanwhile, Dir. Labios noted that Negros Island does not want coal-fired power plants here because “as a matter of policy”, the people, local government officials and non- government organizations are against coal. Cebu, having the

biggest requirement, has a “practical approach as long as the (coal power) technology used pass environmental laws, rules and regulations”, Labios said.

The Therma Visayas coal-fired power plant in Toledo City generates 300MW, with two units each at 150MW, according to Labios.
