AUGUST 2017 • COUNTRY LIFE IN BC

BC sheep producers take honours at

national competition Twenty-one breeders participate in annual show and sale

by BARBARA JOHNSTONE GRIMMER

RED DEER – BC purebred

sheep producers were well represented at the 35th All Canada Sheep Classic in Red Deer, Alberta, taking top honours in several breed categories as well as supreme champion ram. Robin Herlinveaux and his

son, Richard, of Hazelmere Farms in North Saanich won supreme champion ram for a Hampshire which sold for $2,050. They also won reserve champion Hampshire ram as well as champion and reserve champion Texel ewes. Hazelmere Farms also produce vegetables and flowers but became involved with purebred sheep 30 years ago through the family’s involvement in 4-H. The Herlinveaux family are often seen at sheep shows and exhibitions in BC, and at the annual Classic. “We have been buying and

breeding for quality, as well as fast-growing, feed-efficient sheep all along, so I guess it was our turn,” says Herlinveaux. “The credit should go to Richard, who picked them.” Twenty-one purebred

breeders with nine breeds of sheep travelled from BC to attend the show and sale June 29-July 1. Other winners

were Olde Country Registered Sheep from Sidney with their reserve champion Charollais ram; Anchor Farm from Pritchard with champion and reserve champion Dorper ewes; Whistling Wind Ranch from Kamloops with their reserve champion Dorper ram; Mountain View Farms from Langley won reserve champion Hampshire ewe; Coneygeers Farm from Nanaimo had a champion North Country Cheviot ewe, Higginson Southdowns of Sardis showed the champion Southdown ram; and City and Country Southdowns of Chilliwack took reserve champion with their Southdown ram.

The highest price was $4,500

for the champion North Country Cheviot Ram from Greg Rosenke of Didsbury, AB. The average price for ewes was $626 and for rams, $938. A total of 184 ewes and 142 rams were purchased by buyers from across Canada. Besides the sheep show

and sale, events also included a fleece competition sponsored by Canadian Co-operative Wool Growers Ltd. and Custom Woolen Mills Ltd., a junior sheep show and a market lamb jackpot. During the Classic, the

Canadian Sheep Breeders’ Association (CSBA) and the Canadian Sheep Federation

Canada Sheep Classic each year to bring the best sheep together in one place to improve breed quality across Canada. The show and sale takes place in a different province each year, with this year’s event hosted by the Alberta Sheep Breeders’ Association. Next year’s event takes place in Truro, Nova Scotia.
