Salisbury

Salisbury Cathedral

Salisbury is a magnificent medieval city dominated by it’s majestic Cathedral, with chequer pattern streets and half-timbered buildings overflowing with charm. 2015 saw the celebration of 800 years of Magna Carta with events and exhibitions. Magna Carta (Latin for “Great Charter”) is one of the most celebrated documents in English history. Only four original 1215 copies of Magna Carta remain and viewing the best preserved of these in Salisbury Cathedral’s Chapter House is a must during your stay, now presented in a wonderful new interactive exhibition.

A Grade I listed building, Mompesson House is the largest and finest house on Chorister’s Green, in the Cathedral Close. It is a perfect Queen Anne townhouse, built in 1701, with a limestone façade, symmetrical windows and elegant wrought-iron railings. The interior features beautiful mid-18th-century plasterwork, marble chimney pieces, light airy rooms and the Turnbull collection of 18th-century drinking glasses of national importance. The tranquil atmosphere is enhanced by the walled garden where you can relax in a delightful Garden Tea Room. (house open Mar- Nov: closed Thurs/ Fri)

Within the Cathedral Close there are a number of other fine buildings including Arundell’s, the former home of ex-prime minister Edward Heath, The Rifles (Berkshire and Wiltshire) Museum and the Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum. At the Rifles you will be able to see the collection and archives of the Berkshire and Wiltshire infantry regiments from 1748 to the current day. Salisbury Museum is based in the grade I listed King’s House and its displays help tell the tale of medieval Salisbury and Old Sarum.

Outside you’ll find traditional English pubs, great shops, galleries, restaurants, cafes, beautiful parks and gardens and a superb range of attractions.

The explorer can find out more by joining Salisbury City Guides for a guided tour, departing from Salisbury Information Centre at 11.00am daily during the summer and weekends during the winter. If you fancy wandering at your own pace take time to explore the city with its ancient alleyways, river banks and streets. And don’t forget the Playhouse, Arts Centre or City Hall for the best in arts and entertainment.

Shopping in Salisbury is a pleasure. Many shops can be found along medieval streets in delightful half-timbered buildings that are attractions in themselves. As well as the major chain stores the city has an impressive selection of independent and specialist shops selling the sort of things that you just won’t find anywhere else. Salisbury has a selection of shopping centres and nowhere is more than a short stroll away.

Salisbury’s Charter Market held on a Tuesday and Saturday is the biggest and best in Wiltshire and has been taking place for almost 800 years. Continental Markets also take place throughout the year and Salisbury’s Market Place is also the venue for a Wiltshire Farmers Market on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month, while the hugely successful Christmas Market runs from 27th Nov to 20th Dec.

Step outside of the city and you will be surprised at the range and quality of shops in towns like Downton, Amesbury, Tisbury and Mere, selling locally produced gifts and produce. Don’t forget the farm shops for guaranteed fresh locally grown produce at keen prices.

Eating & Drinking in Salisbury and South Wiltshire is a real pleasure.
