Raising awareness of breast cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, with over 50,000 women, and 350 men, being diagnosed each year.

Breast Cancer Haven is the charity that supports women through their breast cancer treatment. When breast cancer tries to rob a woman of her individuality, her confidence or her strength, Breast Cancer Haven provide the tailored package of emotional, physical and practical support that helps her hold on to them.

There is a network of six welcoming centres around the UK, one of which is in Hereford and has recently undergone a refurbishment thanks to a grant from the Eveson Trust. Breast Cancer Haven Hereford also welcomes a new centre manager, Di Emmett, a previous breast care nurse specialist at Hereford County Hospital.

Di Emmett, Breast Cancer Haven, Hereford Centre Manager said:

“My experience as a specialist breast care nurse has shown me that a diagnosis of breast cancer is devastating and life changing. The side effects of medical treatment can often be very challenging and can disrupt the quality of life for patients, often leading to longterm psychological and emotional trauma. This is where Breast Cancer Haven comes in. We provide therapies to our visitors that compliment their hospital treatments. Therapies are given, free of charge, which help minimise some of the side effects of breast cancer treatment. These therapies include acupuncture, reflexology, counseling, hypnotherapy and nutritional therapy. A range of classes, such as yoga, pilates and tai chi encourage stretching, movement and breathing and are also a valuable forum for informal support between visitors.

It’s an exciting time to have joined Breast Cancer Haven, its Breast Cancer Awareness Month and time to spread awareness to those affected by breast cancer and to let them know that we’re here to provide them with the support that treatment alone can’t. The centre in Hereford costs £300,000 per year to run so October is also a time to raise funds so that we can continue to provide support to even more women from Herefordshire and beyond.”

Breast Cancer Haven will also launch their ‘Helping to find YOU again’ campaign, a photo and film series by celebrity photographer, Keith Rogers. The campaign brings together people from all walks of life who have been directly and indirectly affected by a breast cancer diagnosis. The people involved speak honestly about the impact breast cancer has had on their lives and how support from Breast Cancer Haven has helped them to manage their diagnosis and medical treatment. ‘Helping to find YOU again’ invites others to share their stories via social media using the hashtag #ThisIsMe.

Breast Cancer Haven can be accessed by anyone affected by breast cancer and has a range of fundraising events throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Find out more by visiting breastcancerhaven.org.uk or calling 01432 361 061.
