39 4-H members on the quest for a future with food

Tour provides insights into career potential in agriculture

by JENNA ZINGER

My name is Jenna Zinger and I am a 4-H member from the Pritchard Lamb and Beef Club. This year, I applied and was accepted for a 4-H program called Agri Career Quest (ACQ). ACQ is made up of 4-H members aged 16-21 from around the province. The title of the program accurately describes the content of the trip: • Agri: Agriculture awareness and sustainable production.

• Career: Training in not only writing cover letters and resumes, but also in how to handle interviews and networking.

• Quest: Looking at different job and career options in agriculture and the high demand for them. In order to fulfill all of this,

the ACQ curriculum included travelling around the Southern Interior and touring different farms and contributors to agriculture. Along the way, we also learned through both lectures and practice the numerous ways to effectively market ourselves as potential employees.

The journey begins We began our journey in

Abbotsford at Columbia Bible College on May 4. There, we were introduced to each other and to the issues affecting farmers and agriculture today. The next day began with our first tour at Clearbrook Grain and Milling. They produce poultry, dairy and hog feed in addition to Nature’s Pride products, and process vitamins. Our next tour was at

Rainbow Greenhouses in Abbotsford. Rainbow produces flowers and household plants shipped to Home Depot, Wal-Mart and Costco. Next, we went to the Local

Harvest Market, where we were served a delicious lunch that was made completely from locally grown food. We then visited the John

Deere dealer, PrairieCoast Equipment, located in Chilliwack. After this, we spent the night at Lac le Jeune Resort in Kamloops. The next day began with a

tour of Indian Garden Ranch in Savona. We were shown the cattle and the ranch’s effective electric fence system. Then, we heard the amazing history of past and

present ranchers. Finally, we were taught about drones and how they can assist farmers.

Our second tour of the day

was at River Breeze Dairy in Vernon. Then, it was time to go our hotel – but not to rest! The learning continued as we did many team activities to explore our “power skills,” and finished with training on how to write cover letters. The next day we worked

on resumé building and then headed out to Quail’s Gate Estate Winery for a tour of their vineyards and production facility. Next, we went to Paynter’s

Market in West Kelowna and Harker’s Organics in Cawston. After this, we spent the night at the beautiful Rockridge Canyon Camp in Princeton and had free time. We turned

on the country music and taught each other how to dance. What a blast that was! Our last day of tours

brought us back to the Fraser Valley and included Westgen, Lepp Farm Market for lunch, and then Vanderpol’s Eggs. We ended where we began

at the Columbia Bible College on May 8 and that evening, we worked on interview training.

The last day included

networking practice and we had the thrilling opportunity to interview people in a vast variety of agriculture careers. We learned a ton but

somehow managed to have even twice as much fun! The friendships that were created will last a life time and the often hilarious memories will stay with us forever. I know for myself, the things I’ve

learned will not only assist me later in life with my career choices, but have also
