Framlingham is fortunate to have many great independent shops and businesses offering residents and visitors to the town a varied shopping experience. One such shop is Castle Shoes and having taken over in July 2016, business partners linda main and Donnahammond have recently celebrated their first anniversary at the shop. There is a lovely relaxed atmo-
sphere here and customers are invited to have a browse and a chat but there is no pressure to buy something. This is one of the big advantages of independent retailers. as often as not you are dealing with the business owner and no one understands the importance of great customer ser- vice like the owners themselves.
Joining the ladies in the shop is Karen, who shares their same sense of fun and professionalism. The first thing that you will
notice is the friendly greeting. a warm smile and a chirpy ‘hello’ goes a long way. There are no high-pressure sales tactics, cus- tomers are invited to take their time to browse the collections or if you would like some help, the ladies are on hand to give a few ideas and suggestions and per- haps offer some inspiration. again, in a world where you can order shoes online or walk in to just about any supermarket or large retailer and buy them off the shelf, there is something a little old fashioned about a shop where you can have your feet measured and a shoe picked and individu-
ally fitted for you. however, old fashioned
doesn’t mean out of date. The col- lections here at Castle Shoes include current fashions and lines from notable brands such as: Star- trite, rieker, Padders, lotus, lunar, Van-Dal, UKD and gar- diners. The ladies are always looking to add new lines and are very excited to be introducing a range from levi’s in the coming weeks. Something that first time visitors to the shop will quickly notice is a love of leopard print and bright colours and the addi- tion of Elvis and Priscilla, two French Bulldogs either side of the front door! The whole team are trained to
measure and fit shoes, and having both squeezed their feet into the wrong shoes in the name of fash- ion, they now take real pleasure in seeing people walk out of the shop in a well-fitted and stunning looking pair of shoes. Perhaps it is never more important to get a good fit than when buying shoes for children. again, the ladies have received extensive training from Startrite and specialise in fit- ting shoes for children of all ages. The selection of children’s shoes is ever-growing and seeing youngsters come in for their first pair of school shoes is something that gives Donna and linda great pleasure. Being an independent shop

ThE Bentwaters Cold War museum is holding a special Open day on Sunday 17th Sep- tember to celebrate both the 10th anniversary of the museum and the unveiling of thea-10 Thun- derbolt ii aircraft exhibit follow- ing restoration to the colours and markings whilst it operated from raF Bentwaters. The base was in operation
from 1944 to 1993 with initially the raF and then the USaF from 1951, raF Bentwaters
played an important role in both WWii and the Cold War. The museum was opened in 2007 in the USaF Command Post and has grown to include a number of aircraft types that represent the Cold War. Of great signifi- cance was the acquisition of the a-10, affectionately known as the “Warthog”, in early 2016. The USaF stationed six
squadrons of a-10s at raF Bentwaters and the nearby base of raF Woodbridge under the
command of the 81st Tactical Fighter Wing, which was the largest wing in the USaF at the time in the 1980’s. it was a familiar sight in the skies of Suf- folk and many locals often speak with fondness of this iconic air- craft. The Open Day will include an
opportunity to view a special exhibition of the museum histo- ry. Other attractions are a display of classic american and British cars, military vehicles, fire
engines, re-enactors in combat uniforms, USaF police vehi- cles, Birds of Prey display and hot and cold refreshments. Opening times are 10am to
4pm and admission is the normal museum entrance fee of £5 for adults, children free and conces- sions £4. This is a great opportunity to
see the a-10 and relive the past of Bentwaters and Woodbridge. Simon Gladas
