A TEENAGER who assaulted po- lice officers after being caught car- rying drugs in Maidstone has appeared in court. Azden Jdaa (18) admitted being
in possession of cannabis in the High Street on June 30 and assault- ing twoofficers at Maidstone police station. Jdaa, from Canterbury,was sen-
tenced by Mid Kent magistrates to 57 days in prison, suspended for 12 months. He was also ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work in the community and pay £250 compensation, £85 costs and a £115 victim surcharge.
Aacker jailed
A 39-YEAR-OLD shoplifter who assaulted a man at a store in Maid- stone has been jailed. Daniel Graham Reed admitted
theft and common assault on July 14 and being in possession of am- phetamine in Maidstone High Street on March 21. Medway magistrates heard that
Reed, of no fixed address, stole al- cohol worth £29.50 and assaulted a man at the supermarket in Romney Place, Maidstone. He was sentenced to 90 days in
prison and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £115 victim surcharge.

Former police officer joins hospice board
A MAIDSTONE hospice has ap- pointed former deputy chief con- stable of Kent Police as its chairman of its board of trustees. Jim Barker-McCardle, pictured,
has been given the role at Heart of Kent Hospice, in Aylesford, where he has been a trustee since October 2016. Mr Barker-McCardle retired from policing in 2013 after 31 years, dur- ing which he served as deputy chief constable of Kent Police, deputy chief executive and chief operating officer of the National Policing Im- provementAgency and chief consta- ble of Essex Police. His stepfather spent time at the hospice and Mr Barker-McCardle was struck by the “caring and cheer- ful” atmosphere there. He said: “Although thiswas some
years ago, I remember thinking that Heart of Kent wasn't what I imag- ined a hospice to be. It wasn't at all like a hospital and the atmosphere was lovely, caring and really cheer- ful, which I know seems a strange thing to say in the circumstances. “I feel privileged to be part of such
year on year, to keep providing out- standing patient care.We havemany supporters, but need many more, andwe need everyone living in our catchment area to know more about whatwe do andhowwe are funded. I look forward to helping make that happen.” Chief executive, Sarah Pugh said:
