ICE DETECTION

FEATURE SPONSOR

Moving into the digital age

The fos4X system for ice detection “Rotor Ice Control” optimises the operation of wind turbines under icing significantly

The safety relevant stop and certified automatic restart lead to increased revenues of above €10,000 per winter*

Furthermore, heating cycles can be optimised to much higher efficiency.

The mission of fos4X

The levers of classical mechanical engineering and plant construction are well-developed. Consolidation and production shifting are certainly suited to lower energy production costs. Dr. Lars Hoffmann, CEO of fos4X says: “We are, however, convinced that closer collaboration between turbine manufacturers and suppliers, collection of smart data, open interfaces and application-oriented software to optimise operations are the better solutions for the industry. With this conviction, lots of domain knowledge, fantastic metrology products and modern data analysis methodology, we are helping the wind industry move forward into the digital age.”

The fos4Blade platform is designed to be the rotor blade sensing standard. It consists of three fos4Strain expert strain sensors and a fos4Acc 2D vibrations sensor per blade to capture all relevant physical quantities in rotor blades. The sensors are monitored by the fos4Test measurement device, which is specifically designed for the operation in the rotating hub and enables robust and reliable real-time measurements with high sampling rates to be used for control applications. The fibre-optic measurements are translated by the blade physics library into easy-to-use physical quantities and provided via field busses and IOT-ready interfaces. Based on this open hardware

How fos4X applications work All the fos4X solutions for optimising wind turbines such as detection of ice, control of loads or structural health monitoring are based on the fos4Blade hardware platform.

platform fos4X offers several software applications for optimising wind turbines such as the system fos4Blade Rotor Ice Control.

Automatic restart certified A main feature of the fos4X ice detection system is the ability of automatic restarting. The fos4X ice detection system detects a “free of ice” condition reliably even when the wind turbine has stopped or is idling and triggers the restart of the system automatically. This is also valid for very low wind speeds and visual inspections become unnecessary. The automatic restart has been certified by DNV GL and is compliant with statutory safety requirements, therefore the highest possible plant operating efficiency can be achieved.

Robust and accurate The fos4X sensors are based on the technology of fibre Bragg gratings.
