REBUILDING SRI LANKA:

SPRING UP, O WELL! GIVE ME LIFE ABUNDANTLY “And if thou…satisfy the afflicted soul…Thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, ‘The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.’ ”

– Isaiah 58:10-12 WME Partners & Supporters,

Imagine the country where you lived suffered 25 years of civil war. Worse, your community was in the main battle lines. Nearly everything you owned was lost. You spent nights in the woods for fear of being killed in your sleep. Eventually, you were displaced and lived in a camp. You saw children become soldiers, and others suffer without housing, water, sanitation or education.

After the war ended, people in big cities saw major improvement, but this was not the case for people like you. You returned home to destroyed roads, houses and schools. The government gave you a small parcel of land to live on. But there is no clean water readily available. Landmines are still active in less traveled areas. How do you pick up the shattered pieces of your life and start over?

Sadly, this narrative is the story of people in northern and eastern Sri Lanka who are trying to recover from a civil war that took an estimated 200,000 lives. Until recently many post-war, resettlement villages were cut off from the rest of Sri Lanka. That hasn’t stopped Woody and Melanie Blok, our WME ministry partners in Sri Lanka, from reaching these lost souls. Their team is preaching hope to those left in desolation and despair. They are ministering emotional and spiritual healing to orphaned children, widows and those traumatized by war.

Due to persistent drought, lack of water is a major problem in this area. We can help by giving desperately-needed tube wells to these resettlement villages. To gain access to clean water, tube wells are dug 100-120 feet below ground. These tube wells are placed on the property of a believer in each resettlement village to ensure the water supply equipment is kept safe and is well maintained. The water these wells provide is available day or night to the entire community, allowing God’s light to shine from Christian compassion offered freely.

This water well offers this refugee’s first real hope in years.

A tearful man recently testified when the water first pumped out from the tube well in his village, his kids screamed for joy —- they had never seen water flow like that. Now many families travel up to 2 or 3 miles for water, and more come daily as they hear about this well.
