Regional Director’s welcome
Welcome to the 2016/17 Statistical Report. This year has been a very busy 12 months working with our existing and new licence holders. I would like to thank you and your teams for all the support you have given your participants in order to enable them to complete their DofE programmes and achieve their Awards as the year has gone on.
This year has seen the DofE continue to grow across the Central England Region and we increased the number of Licensed Organisations from 456 at the close of 2016 to 656 at the end of March 2017. This represented a 44% increase in the number of Directly Licensed Centres that our team is now supporting. We also continue to support 412 centres that are operating under Operating Authority licences which include local authorities and a small number of localised trust licences.
This year the report we have provided you with is a full statistical summary of the activity across the Central England Region, incorporating DLCs and Centres, and presented in County or City format. This will allow you to see the extent to which the DofE is supporting young people – not just in your own area but across all the different areas of Central England. The data represents all Awards started and Awards achieved, by level and by organisation, from 1 April 2016- 31 March 2017.
The DofE goes from strength to strength each year with 271,439 young people undertaking a DofE programme across the UK during 2016/17. In Central England we saw a 6% increase in the number of young people starting their programme, culminating in 45,140 in total for the year. In addition we saw the number of young people completing their programmes rise by almost 11%, to 22,171. A clear indication that as we celebrated our 60th Anniversary the DofE remained as relevant to today’s young people as ever.
We will be celebrating our success further with you in the new academic year with the publication of our full Regional Annual Review. The review will include more information on the Regional achievements along with a celebration of some of the great work both you and the young people are undertaking every day through the DofE.
I would like to close by thanking you all once again for your continued support and I look forward to sharing some great news stories in the Regional Review in September.
Phil Brown Director – Central England
