4-H BC
introduced to the 4-H BC community this year. Registration will wrap up at the end of March and the 4-H office is looking forward to reviewing the stats for the upcoming year. The first 4-H BC Provincial
Council meeting was held February 24 -26 in Vernon with council members from all seven regions in attendance. Heather Serafini is the new council president. Matt Langelaan is vice president. 4-H BC would like to thank out going president Lorna Kotz for all her years of hard work and look forward to having her continue in her past president role. 4-H BC lottery tickets are
available again this year from local clubs and from the 4-H BC office. Two lucky winners will each win the grand prize of a John Deere – XUV 560 4X4 Gator generously donated by PrairieCoast Equipment. Ticket sales end May 30. The draw date is June 10 at Davison Orchards in Vernon.
The 4-H BC office is busy EDITED BY GINA HAAMBUCKERS
preparing for its 2017 summer programs: Agri- Career Quest, Youth Action and Provincial Communication Finals. Agri-Career Quest will be held May 4-9 and focuses on
careers in agriculture. This program is open to both 4-H members and non-4-H members and will take the delegates through the Fraser Valley and Okanagan regions on a charter bus to discover all types of career opportunities within the agriculture sector. Youth Action is an
opportunity for 14-and15- year-old 4-H members to come together for five days to explore issues important to youth, to learn new self- esteem skills and to learn leadership skills while working in groups. The application deadline for Youth Action is May 19. A big part of 4-H is the communications program. The speech component of the communication program is happening at the club, district and regional levels all over BC this spring.
A demonstration is the
next challenge in the communications program. A demonstration is a team of two members who show their audience how to make (or do)

something. Demonstrations can be on anything from how to make cupcakes to how to dock a lamb’s tail – and everything in between. A speak and show is another communications
program option. It’s similar in concept to a demonstration but presented by a single member. A favourite speak and show topic of 4-H BC manager Claudette Martin is “how to wash a chicken.”
Don’t ever give up
There’s something special to be said about folks displaying what I call plain and simple gutsiness. In
to meet both personal and market demand are major components of success. Although the examples below do not cater to huge provincial, national or
international markets, each of them has made a solid
contribution to their
respective communities, agricultural and otherwise. They’ve also provided a viable source of income for each person involved.
Three separate events
triggered these thoughts: preparation of an article for Country Life in BC about a young couple who recently won our local Chamber of Commerce award for excellence in agriculture; the expansion of a café located in a small town in southeast Saskatchewan; and, the success of two Powell River women entrepreneurs. In each case, these folks are making a difference in their respective worlds and industries and proving to the world that “it can be done.” The young couple who beat out other nominees for the Powell River Chamber of Commerce Agricultural Award of 2016 didn’t initially plan to get into farming. They’d moved to our geographically isolated part of the world to share a property with his mother. One thing led to another and today they operate an ever- expanding operation worthy of recognition. In the second example,
shift your thoughts to the tiny village of Forget in southeast Saskatchewan. I’ve never written about an out- of-province venture for this publication before but this one deserves a nod. Once home to a large monastery, convent and private school, for the past number of decades it has hosted a population of 40 people. One of the few thriving businesses is The Happy Nun café.
See WANNABE on next page o With the new electronic
enrollment system, the 4-H BC gator lottery and preparations underway for our summer programs, the 4-H BC office is really looking forward to the upcoming year.
