Q&A

Roger Drayer, FPCA’s property manager, offers an update on how the church’s campus is being maintained with staff and congregational support

First of all, tell us a little about yourself.

I am married to Tara Drayer, whom many people know from her time on staff handling church finances. I have four children: Jesse, Melissa, Michael, and Megan. I served four years with the United States Navy in a P-3 squadron and retired as Whitehall postmaster after 28 years with the Postal Service. As a teenager, I helped my stepfather build the house we lived in. I’ve always done my own home repairs and operate a woodworking shop from my garage. I enjoy motorcycles, golf, woodworking, and an occasional beer with my friends and family.

What drew you to property management at FPCA?

Te property management position was posted as part time with flexible hours. At this stage of my life, working part time would get me off the south 40 from time to time and provide an opportunity to work for an organization that I felt I would enjoy. I’ve always had a good working grasp of building maintenance and repairs. Couple that with my managerial background and fiscal responsibilities while employed at the Postal Service, and I felt that I was a good fit for the position.

What are some of the challenges of our property?

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the time and effort that the Property Team put into the church to keep whatever challenges I faced to a minimum. Tey are well organized and laid much of the groundwork for the

projects that are still under way today. Te Chapel windows were in need of repair and were replaced in November 2016. Realizing that our HVAC preventative maintenance contractor was complacent, we went in a different direction with a new contractor in October 2016 in an effort to eliminate some of the issues we had with the system. Te church playground was identified as unsafe and immediately taken out of service. Tanks to the work of church leadership and assistance of many church members, a new playset will be on site shortly [see page 10].

What teams do you work with?

I work primarily with the Property Team and the JACK Team. Te Property Team gives me an opportunity to gauge the pulse of the congregation regarding the direction they feel the building and improvements should go—sort of a “state of the building” meeting. I refer to the JACK Team as our “get ’er done” team. Tey meet every Tursday morning, roll up their sleeves, and assist with various projects around the church. Marilyn Leiby is instrumental in organizing the church kitchen. I find that I work with these teams/volunteers often because of the nature of my responsibilities. We recently received approval to enlist Parkland Nurseries to provide beginning-of-the-year mulching, weeding, and edging to support our landscaping team this year.

What are some things you have accomplished or are planning?

Providing a clean, safe, well-maintained place of worship for our members and guests. We haven’t yet done everything we could but are headed in the right direction.

Any closing thoughts?

I have enjoyed this past year at FPCA and feel very welcomed here. I’d like to thank everyone for that, and I look forward to our future relationship.
