The joys of a Manitoba summer T
his summer, there are endless ways to enjoy Manitoba’s long, sunny days – with festivals fill- ing the calendar and adventures just waiting to
be had.
It’s Canada’s 150th birthday with celebrations across the province to mark the milestone day. Canad Inns will host its Family Fun Day at Assiniboine Park with family-friendly activities, entertainment and fireworks. If you’re looking for a more challenging way to cel- ebrate the day, then try your hand at building a Red River cart at Fort la Reine Museum, run a marathon in Great Falls with the beautiful Canadian Shield as your backdrop, or enjoy taking in the Dragon Boat Festival in Portage la Prairie. Riding Mountain National Park and Oak Hammock Marsh will also be hosting Can- ada Day activities, perfect for the entire family. And of course, The Forks is always a hub of activity with fireworks to crown the evening’s celebrations.
The summer of festival fun is here! Dance through
prairie fields of Birds Hill Park at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, July 6 to 9. Drama or slapstick, choose from hundreds of performances at Winnipeg Fringe Festi- val, taking over the Exchange District, July 19 to 30. Manitoba’s only pro rodeo rides into Morris for the Manitoba Stampede & Exhibition, July 20 to 23. And from July 26 to 30, you can watch movies on the beach at the Gimli Film Festival.
Manitoba’s Hudson Bay coastline is home to the world’s largest population of beluga whales. More than 57,000 beluga whales gather in the region during the summer months. Head north for a whale-watching adventure, where pods of curious whales circle and fol- low your boat, gliding in and out of the water. Hop in a kayak or strap on a snorkel to share a smile with these friendly whales.
The August long weekend signals the midpoint of
summer and a reason to celebrate! See the pioneer lifestyle come alive at Steinbach Pioneer Days at the Mennonite Heritage Museum. Borscht, perogies and other tasty fare is on the menu at Canada’s National Ukrainian Festival in Dauphin, and Viking warriors emerge for the Icelandic Festival of Manitoba in Gimli. And for one more reason to party – Folklorama kicks off this August long weekend.
Manitoba’s remote lakes, running deep and cold, carry a secret. A secret you’ll discover when the tug on your rod jolts you to the core and you reel in a massive fish. The thrill of the action on the water is comple- mented by the five-star amenities at a luxury lodge. Fly-in to a wilderness retreat to find the ultimate fish- ing adventure. Local guides will take you to the best places to find the biggest fish.

Sharing true patriot love during our celebratory year Helen Harper
ur nation is celebrating its 150th birthday this month, and I for one will be doing it with gusto. Too often we Canadians sit on our hands when it comes to patriotism. We certainly are not as demonstrative as our neighbours to the south. Some- times this isn’t a bad thing, but I truly feel we should be showing our apprecia- tion at this special time and, yes, with some noise. I chose my noisemakers to be my flowers and flags. With a bit of spray paint and some selective plant pur- chases, I turned my patio into a sea of red and white.
O Happy Birthday to us all.
My family came home for the July party. My grandchildren are American born but made with Canadian parts,

and this proud grandma loves to infuse Canadianism into their lives as often as possible. My hope is that some day when they are older they will say they enjoyed their trip to the great open North as much as they did going to the Jersey shore.
I also have some new friends coming up later in the summer from Minnesota and am busy working out our visit itin- erary. I want to show off all the won- derful and interesting things we have to offer. They won’t be here long enough to see everything but a few highlights
will be Grand Beach, Gimli, Museum of Human Rights, BDI, a walk through Osborne Village and Corydon, Assini- boine Park for a picnic and some Jazz at Lyric and my list just keeps growing. After their visit I’m sending them off to Clear Lake in their camper, for a few days and to then leave Canada through the International Peace Gardens. I’m hoping they will leave with a new ap- preciation for their neighbours. We have so much to offer and prob- ably don’t take advantage of it enough ourselves. It takes a visit from out of town folks to remind us of all the won- ders in this province and country. So I say to you, Happy Birthday to Us. Be proud, be loud, if only in your flower pots.
