WELDING

Flexible Welding Enclosure® for the Automotive Industry

T

itanium and chrome steel tubing are used in the manufacture of safety cages for sports vehicles,

to protect the driver and any passengers such as a co-driver in case the car were to roll over. Both titanium and chrome steel need to be welded in the absence of oxygen to ensure that the risk of structural defects in the joints is minimised. For such cases, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® has designed and manufactured special Flexible Welding Enclosures® to accommodate the large structures once they are ready for welding. Once the parts are inside and the enclosure sealed with its leak tight zip, purging with argon can begin to remove all of the air within. Ron Sewell, Chairman for HFT® said: “We manufacture very large

special Enclosures for sports vehicles to be welded inside. They are manufactured with a large number of glove ports placed around the Enclosures so that all parts can be accessed for welding.” “Purging times are relatively fast because the Enclosure can be collapsed before the structure is built, thus expelling the majority of the air, after which, inert argon gas can be admitted to inflate the Enclosure to it’s full size while purging out the remainder of the air.”

HFT® have recently introduced the updated PurgEye® Desk, Weld Purge Monitor®, which is connected to the exhaust port of the Enclosure, so that all of the exhausting gas passes across the newly designed fast reaction, long life sensor providing accurate readings of the oxygen level down

to 10 parts per million. The PurgEye® Desk has an integral electro mechanical pump that extracts samples at a given rate for instances where the flow of gas might be insufficient for consistent readings. This Model belongs to the latest range of HFT® Weld Purge Monitors® that are fitted with PurgeNet™, allowing them to communicate with external devices. One of which is the Traffic Light Accessory, which provides visual warnings of high or low oxygen levels that might require some action by welding personnel.

Another accessory on the network is an automatic control system that can manipulate automatic welding power supplies to switch off in the event of too much oxygen in the system, which could cause welds to be made at

an undesirable oxygen level, which would render them rejectable. HFT® has carried on to use it’s expertise in purpose designed and manufactured Flexible Welding Enclosures® for Additive Manufacturing purposes for large components or structures that can be manufactured in one piece by the WAAM process (Wire plus Arc, Additive Manufacturing) providing dramatic savings in costs.
