Annual football match in memory of Charlie


A TRIBUTE match at the county town’s football ground is set to be- come an annual event in memory of Aylesford Stones fan Charlie Girling (pictured). The youngster, who died in July


last year at an international jam- boree in Finland with fellow Scouts from Aylesford, was a keen sup- porter of Maidstone FC. With the support of Char- lie’s family, a match last Christ- mas is now set to be repeated each July as a celebra- tion of his life. It is being organ-


ised with the help of Charlie’s schoolmates at Maplesden Noakes in Maidstone. Head teacher Richard Owen will be among those turning out on Saturday, July 1, for the first game between teachers and leaders of Aylesford Scout Group. Year 7 and 8 students from Charlie’s school will also play. MrOwen said:“We’d love to raise


a significant amount towards the new Scout hut atAylesford inmem- ory of Charlie.”

start on a memorial garden. Mr Owen said: “This will be a reflective place for students, looking out over the Medway River valley, almost opposite the stadium, so on a good day, you can hear the crowd where Charlie spent many happy hours supporting his team.” Charlie’s Gardenwas designed by


the school council, which has al- ready received £5,000 from Tesco charity tokens and £1,000 from Golding Homes. Landscaping work should be complete before the sum-


mer is out. It will include 270 trees, from the Woodland Trust, which will be planted by students. Mr Owen said: “Charlie’s family intend putting a bench in his memory there.” Gates open on the charity football

A MAIDSTONE man who used a credit card to get cash for himself has been jailed for fourweeks. Robert Davey Jackson was sen- tenced on June 1 2017 at Medway Magistrates’ Court. He pleaded guilty to fraud. In October 2016, the 24-year-old,


of Church Street, Maidstone, used a credit card in someone else’s name to make a gain of money for himself.


Magistrates sentenced Jackson to


28 days in prison. Mid Kent magistrates ordered


that he must also pay £85 costs and a £115 victim surcharge.


Carmody ban


A WOMAN found guilty of drink- driving in Maidstone has been banned from driving for more than three years. Ashleigh Carmody (24), from Heathcote Close, Aylesford, pleaded guilty at court to being over the limit when she was stopped in her Renault Clio in Fountain Lane. She gave a breath test of 58mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mg. Mid Kent magistrates banned her


for 38 months The bench aslo ordered that she


pay a £300 fine, £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.
