Lake County is nature-made for good times in the great outdoors. Planning a trip in the warmer months but not sure where to start? We’ve got a few suggestions to get you going. Read along as we take you on a Friday–Sunday “circle tour” of some of Lake County’s essential destinations.

Enrich

MORNING: Chicago Botanic Garden. Hop on a tram tour or stroll the paths through 385 acres of lush gardens and natural habitats.

AFTERNOON: Edward L. Ryerson Conservation Area. Head to Riverwoods and explore this 561-acre preserve. Follow winding trails through pristine woodlands to a quiet river. You may even see threatened or endangered species.

EVENING: Ravinia Festival. Grab a blanket, pack a picnic and head over to North America’s oldest outdoor music festival, featuring all genres from classical music to classic rock.

ENJOY

ALL DAY: Grab breakfast at Wildberry in Libertyville, then take the kids to Six Flags Great America for a day of thrills, or pack a lunch and head for the water. Drive north to the sandy shores of Illinois Beach State Park or take a short trip up Highway 12 to Chain O’Lakes State Park.

EVENING: Dinner and more. All that fun in the sun can work up a mighty hunger. From casual family-style to romantic fine dining, Lake County offers endless choices to satisfy every palate and occasion.

Indulge

MORNING: Brunch it. From traditional egg dishes and heavenly pancakes to more eclectic fare, head to an eatery in Lincolnshire or Mundelein for America’s favorite meal of the week.

AFTERNOON: Historic Downtown Long Grove. Charming cobblestone walkways, arts and antiques shops and summer festivals make for a perfect Sunday afternoon. Drop by a tasting room at one of the local vineyards to sample locally grown and produced vintages.

Hard to say goodbye? Plan your next trip soon — there’s always something new to discover in Lake County!
