Girls Basketball goes down with a slam dunk
Date: Tuesday 10th January 2017 Venue: St John’s Academy, Marlborough
It was great to see a mix of players from beginners, who had not really ever played competitive basketball, to experienced county players. Each team worked well together to involve their more novice players and I could hear lots of support and advice being given amongst team’s members and teachers. This all enhanced the competition and it was great to see such great sportsmanship being shown with everyone trying their hardest which meant for a good competition.
Thank you to: Referees Walter Amos and Carl Williams and the 2 Young Sports Leaders from St John’s Academy who were great keeping score and supporting the officials.
Mrs Edmondson the Principal of St John’s Academy, ‘ I was impressed with the girls determination and team work which are two of the School Games values. I am very proud to present the winning shield to St John’s Academy but well done to everyone who took part.’

Date: Tuesday 31st January 2017 Venue: Tidworth Leisure Centre
The 8 court sports hall was buzzing with 100 enthusiastic Badminton players representing 20 schools from across Wiltshire and Swindon.
Once the games got underway everyone’s nerves settled and all were encouraging their team mates and cheering each other along. Once the tournament was in full swing we were pleased to welcome Nicola Cerfontyne twice British Singles Champion. The hall filled with great excitement with the presence of an international player arriving. Nicola commented “I really enjoyed meeting all the players, organisers and volunteers at the WiltsSG17. I watched some good matches throughout the day and it was a very well run event. I had the chance to get on court with lots of the players which is always a fun experience and I hope it inspires them to pick up their racket and play more badminton.”
Thank you to: The Young Leaders were from Matravers School and they had been trained by John Murphy to be able to officiate the games. They did an excellent professional job which meant the competition ran really smoothly and to time. The event was organised by 5 coaches from the CBN and it was John Murphy’s final year of organising the event. Steve Boocock CEO of WASP presented John with a trophy as a big

John Murphy said “It was one of our best competitions yet, the play was excellent and the sportsmanship atmosphere was really great to see. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves, even those who were less successful.”

St Augustine’s KS3 Badminton Winners Nicola Cerfontyne twice British Singles Champion Wiltshire and Swindon Relay 3
The 5 schools from across the county who had won their way through to this county final, showed great sportsmanship and the standard of play was excellent. There were some close games and some fast play which made for a very exciting afternoon. It was clear from their first match that, defending champions, Bishop Wordsworth were the team to beat. They won all their matches comfortably although Bradon Forest put up a great fight in the deciding game.
Thank you to: Walter Amos the referee kept everyone in check and was supported by 3 of the Young Sports Leaders from St John’s Academy who did an excellent job of manning the scoring table.
Mrs Edmondson the Principal of St John’s Academy, commented ‘It is a privilege to be able to host such a high standard competition and also be asked to present the medals, well done to everyone who took part.”
