his age with more than twice as much experience at the 2016 CGA North Carolina Amateur Championship at Governors Club in Chapel Hill. The victory capped an impressive year for Lyerly, who


won the North Carolina Boys’ Player of the Year Award for the second straight year. Taking the state amateur lead with an impressive 68 in


windy conditions in the third round, Lyerly played it safe on the 72nd hole, hitting short of a greenside water hazard then pitching on and two-putting for the victory. His final-round 71 gave him an 8-under 280 total -- one shot better than Guilford College coach Justin Tereshko. Lyerly put himself in position for the historic victory


on the final holes of his second round. He flew an 85-yard wedge approach directly into the hole for eagle on No. 6 (his 15th hole). He tacked on a short birdie putt on the par-4 sev- enth to rise into a tie for ninth at 3-under 141, only four shots off the lead. “That kind of kept me in the tournament,” Lyerly said. “I

had a little momentum from my finish in the second round.” Lyerly, who also finished second in the Big I National Championship in Sacramento, Calif., will play at UNC- Greensboro in the fall.

2016 Tournaments Won: CGA North Carolina Amateur Championship, TYGA North State High School Challenge, NCJGF Irish Creek Fall Classic and the Rowan County Junior Open, North Carolina 3-A state championship.


Best Round: 4-under-par 68 in windy conditions to take the third round lead in the North Carolina Amateur at Governors Club. Lyerly went on to become the young- est player in history to win the state amateur. “That was definitely a big one,” Lyerly said. “It gave me the lead and probably the confidence that I could play on that level and win.”


Magic Moment: Tapping in for bogey on the final hole at Governors Club for a bogey and the one-shot victory. “It was Father’s Day. My dad (Roger) loves watching me play golf,” Lyerly said. “He always wanted me to get a big win. He wasn’t there, but he was following me hole- by-hole on the computer and he was getting nervous. I was glad I was able to deliver.”


2017 Goals: I want to win another high school cham- pionship, improve and have a solid season,” Lyerly said. “At UNCG, my goal is to make the five-man traveling team. I want to have a solid season and make a differ- ence on the team.”
