REMINDERS & TIPS LIGHT BULB

• Whenever replacing light bulbs, be sure to check the maximum wattage specifications. Always opt for a light bulb with wattage that’s equal to or less than the maximum wattage listed—too strong a bulb can lead to overloaded wiring which could result in fire.

CORD SAFETY • Frequently check the cords on your appliances to make sure the insulation isn’t cut or damaged.

• Never run cords where someone can trip over them. Never run them under carpet, furniture or through walls where they can easily overheat or be pinched.

• Do not remove the prongs of an electrical plug. If prongs are missing or loose, replace the entire plug. • Only plug one major appliance into an outlet at a time to avoid overloading the outlet.

• Take care to treat power cords gently—never nail or tightly tack them down, and regularly check to make sure that they’re not pinched between or underneath furniture. Excessive pressure to power cables can damage insulation (exposing the conductor), or compress the conducting wire, which can lead to overheating and put you at risk for an electrical fire.

• Inspect cords at least yearly. The wires can become dry and brittle and crack. Damaged or worn cords can cause a short circuit leading to fire or shock. Make it a habit and do it at the same time you replace the batteries in your smoke alarms every year.

APPLIANCE CLEANING • Clean your range and range hood on a regular basis to avoid grease buildup. • Check the dryer ducts regularly for lint buildup, and clean the lint screen after each load. • Register your appliances when you buy them so that you are notified of any recalls.

DISHWASHER

• Run unit through a regular cycle with no detergent on a monthly basis. Add a recommended dishwasher cleaner to eliminate buildup.

DRYER • Make sure the lint trap is clear before and after every load. • Clean dust and lint from around your dryer routinely. • Do not store laundry products on top of your dryer as it can damage the finish and controls.

RANGE • Spot-clean stains in your oven and on your range right after cooking. • When spot-cleaning is ineffective, run the self-clean cycle. • Do not cover the oven bottom with foil as it can damage the liner. • Renew the look of your electric range by replacing the drip bowls.

REFRIGERATOR • Clean up spills immediately. • Clean away dust and lint under and behind your refrigerator routinely. • Replace your filter every 6 months or 200 gallons to maximize contaminant reduction.

LAUNDRY WASHER • If you have an HE washing machine, use only HE detergent.

• Run your machine through a clean cycle monthly if applicable (Please note: not all machines have a clean cycle—check your operator’s manual).

• Replace your washing machine rubber hoses every five years.

MICROWAVE/RANGE HOOD FILTERS • Replace filters every 6 months to improve air circulation and reduce odors.
