discussed by the Board. A motion was made to create the position of AMEA Assistant Executive Director and request Garry Taylor continue to develop the job description (Womack, Huckabee). Passed.


Conference Planning – Garry Taylor presented and discussed a draft of the 2016 Conference schedule. A review of the schedule and discussion occurred. The Board addressed planning issues involving the 2016 AMEA conference including the 70th Anniversary, sponsored clinics, the Boston Brass performance, FJH and Brian Balmages addressing the Young Composers, FAME student participants attending entire Conference, the inclusion of Lightning Round Sessions, and creating a location for members, performers, etc. to pose for a picture with the AMEA sign.


Special Session of the AMEA Governing Board August 29, 2015


Sheraton Hotel, Birmingham, Alabama


The AMEA Governing Board met at the Sheraton Hotel in Birmingham, AL on August 29, 2015. The meeting was called to order at 11:20 a.m. by AMEA President Carl Hancock. Board members present at the meeting: Carl Hancock, Sara Womack, Susan Smith, Garry Taylor, Carla Gallahan, Michael Holmes, Pat Stegall, Sam Nordlund, Cliff Huckabee, Harry McAfee and Jim Zingara. Present via conference call: Sarah Schrader, Ted Hoffman, Becky Lightfoot.


Old Business: MOTION 1: A motion was made to accept Box5


MOTION 2: A motion was made to move the AMEA Conference to the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center for the 2018-19 Conferences (Womack, Holmes). Passed


New Business: 2016 AMEA Hall of Fame - The Board reviewed and voted upon nominees.


The Board conducted a preliminary discussion on the topic of “cross – division participation” within the AMEA Divisions.


Music Education Day at the Capitol – the date for this event will be decided upon in November. Once the date has been set, information will be available in the Ala Breve. The 70th Anniversary will be incorporated in this event.


Website Redesign Update – the Board discussed having a new website design for AMEA that will allow Division use as well. President Hancock has been communicating with Cogent Path on this topic. A motion was made for the Board to accept the proposal from Cogent Path for AMEA website redesign and for President Hancock to continue negotiation of an AMEA logo (Womack, Schrader). Passed.


New Business AMEA Award nomination materials were distributed and reviewed. These awards will be presented at the 2016 Conference.


Two motions were madeto revise the AMEA Contstution. (See below).

Motions to Revise the AMEA Constitution (to be voted on at the 2016 AMEA Conference)


Motion 1:


Article 4, Section 3 - Currently Reads Governing Board. The Governing Board shall be composed of the President, Past-President, President-Elect. Recording Secretary, Treasurer/Registrar, the Collegiate Faculty Advisor, and the President or Chairperson of each of the Divisions. Ex-officio members shall be the Music Consultants of the State Department of Education, the Editor of Ala Breve Magazine, the Executive Director of the AMEA, the Industry Member Representative, the AAAE Representative, the State Collegiate President, and the Executive Director of the Alabama Association of Secondary School Principals, who shall serve in a non-voting capacity. Additional ex-officio, non-voting members of the governing board may be appointed and serve at the discretion of the Governing Board.


Advisory members shall be the Presidents-Elect of each of the Divisions and shall voting capacity.

Advisory members shall be the Presidents-Elect and/or Vice-Presidents of each of the Divisions and shall serve in a non-voting capacity.


45 Motion 2:


Add to Article1, Duties of the Officers, Section 7 Assistant Executive Director. It shall be the duty of the Assistant Executive Director to aide and assist the AMEA Governing Board in planning professional development programs for the association and assist the Executive Director in implementing those plans. He/she will serve as the AMEA liaison to the State Department of Education and maintain the AMEA Constitution, Bylaws, and Executive Handbook in cooperation with the President and Executive Director. He/She will assume the duties of the Executive Director in the case of disability or absence of the Executive Director.


He/she shall maintain


membership in AMEA and perform such other duties as may be required by the Constitution and By-Laws, the Governing Board, and the Executive Director.
