FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE

Partnership is the key to making a difference

Welcome

Glasgow Chamber of Commerce will be fighting hard to help our members grow their businesses and to secure investment for Glasgow and its economy

Awarded Chamber of the Year 2014 at the Scotish Chambers of Commerce Business Honours, we believe that we have the products, people and resources to continue to give even greater value to our members and ensure that Glasgow continues to prosper and grow as a vibrant and dynamic international city. 2014 was, quite simply, the most extraordinary year

W

for Glasgow – a landmark year, in fact. HRH Prince Imran, the President of the Commonwealth Games Federation described Glasgow’s Games as the best ever. Tey surpassed all our expectations and they leave a lasting impression of Glasgow that promises to generate new visitor business for many years to come. Tey showed just how far our city has come and of what we are capable. Glasgow Chamber of Commerce was a vigorous

supporter of the Games throughout. We backed the bid, guided members to the business opportunities involved, helped the Organising Commitee minimise business disruption and made every effort to get our members involved in the Games. We provided members with opportunities to be involved in the Games experience, either through events at the Glasgow Business Embassy in Scotland House or through atendance at the sporting competitions. In numbers, we held 17 events over the 11 days, involving more than 1,000 Chamber members. We are enormous supporters of the city brand

PEOPLE MAKE GLASGOW. Te Games showed us just how powerful the brand is speaking about something authentic to Glasgow. Te brand has become a central element of the next steps for Glasgow. Tat must partly be in securing the Games

legacy, and bringing hundreds of thousands of extra visitors to Glasgow in the years ahead. And it must partly be in promoting Glasgow for business investment and growth. In the referendum, Scotland voted ‘No’; however,

the majority of voters in Glasgow were moved to vote ‘Yes’ to independence. We must understand these messages for change and here at the Chamber we will listen and explore what we can to do respond and ensure that Glasgow maximises opportunities for the benefit of the city. Glasgow Chamber of Commerce will be fighting

hard to help our members grow their businesses and to secure investment for Glasgow and its economy. Glasgow is awash with strong businesses and talented people. We have assets in our universities, airport, and cultural and civic institutions that will all be available to us in making Glasgow one of the most successful cities in Europe. Te Chamber warmly welcomed the

announcement by Councillor Gordon Matheson of a City Deal for Glasgow, securing £1.13 billion of new investment in the infrastructure and innovation work of the city region. Tis has the potential to make a tremendous impact on the city’s competitiveness. So very many of our members are involved in

supporting Glasgow’s growth; in the Glasgow Economic Leadership Board and its industry workstreams, on the City Centre Strategy Board, on the Glasgow Employer Board and its Youth Employment Action Group and in several other ways. Last year we launched a senior business President’s Club to mobilise yet more business leaders behind the Chamber’s contribution to Glasgow’s growth. We all share the same aim to make Glasgow an even

greater place to do business, to work, to live and to enjoy. We are pleased that you and your business are part of this successful team. We look forward to working with you all in 2015.
