SHANKARI’S BALI REREAT – PERFECT FOR INDIVIDUALS, & FOR GROUPS RUNNING WORKSHOPS & RETREATS – reviewed by Emma Stephens, LivingNow
I had bought my ticket to Bali, however was so flat-out at work that I hadn’t really had time to think about it properly… But after having a conversation with Jiah, from Shankari’s Bali Retreat, & hearing all the wonderful things that they have to offer, I was filled with butterflies of excitement! I wanted to avoid the regular ‘tourist traps’ so I booked a week at the west coast retreat, got on the plane, shook my winter blues off & dived into my beautiful Balinese adventure... To my delight, I found that Shankari’s Bali Retreat have so many amazing things to
offer! The whole place had me feeling that it had been conjured up in someone’s fertile imagination – which is sort of how it is: Shankari moved from Australia to Bali in the 1980’s & lovingly built this creative dream of hers so that we all might enjoy it; both for its artistic beauty & for the spiritual retreat that it offers... They have 14
rooms, all with beautiful, unique designs – the care that has gone into the design of
each room is astounding! There are three gorgeous swimming pools, luscious gardens, quiet sitting areas, & many places to relax & soak up the magic. There’s even a gift shop on the premises with jewelry designed by Shankari herself. Their restaurant – Blue Lotus Cafe –
serves great food (Indonesian, Chinese & Western styles, including vegetarian & raw food options), & a range of exotic healthy juices & smoothies – my favourite was called ‘Green Dragon’. They have two lovely spaces for yoga. The
smaller room holds approximately 12 people, while the larger can fit more than 30. I had wonderful (& wonderfully cheap) massages while I was there, & a profound Balinese healing session. I even had a body scrub treatment, which included being bathed in flowers afterwards! As well as yoga, there are many other
activities to choose from: traditional Balinese dance, drumming & gamelan lessons... So many fun things to fill your senses with. There are several great cafes, beach bars & a night market. The beach is a 15 minute walk away; with black volcanic sands, surf breaks & stunning sunsets.... It’s hard to really convey the beauty of
this place; you’d be best to just go there & experience the magic for yourself!
