Gerbrandt says he is only looking at those with a better sugar-to-acid ratio. Seeds are not an issue, as they are not noticeable, and some cultivars have very good flavour, which Bors describes as something between a blueberry and a raspberry. It’s anticipated that they will fit


into a niche market to begin with, rather like loganberries, but Gerbrandt admits he’s “excited to see where this will go.” “I’ve been interested in plant


breeding since early on,” explains Gerbrandt, who says he saw opportunities coming up in the valley to work as a plant breeder in research and he wanted to hone his skills in that area. He is also a sessional instructor at


the University of the Fraser Valley, working with Tom Baumann in the horticulture program, as well as in the new Pacific Berry Resource Centre at UFV. Baumann is delighted to have a


student of Gerbrandt’s calibre working for valley growers and also doing research into alternative crops. “I’m always looking at alternate


crops. I love blueberries, but there is a limit to how much the market can bear,” he comments.
